Some people claim that Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is one of the best games that they have played on the psp, I have also heard others that say it is just plain crap. Well it really is neither of them. MHFU is actually a decent game, at least if you have the patience to play it for at least 10 hours. Early off in the game, things are dull, missions are only about collecting easy to find items and slaying small numbers of common, weak "monsters" ( although they are called monsters many creatures early on are just elk and pig like creatures or dionosaurs). This is when most people are turned off by the game, because the game is called MONSTER HUNTER, not herb gatherer. However players that have enough patience with the game will find many unique landscapes and challenging bosses,which is where the game really comes to life, you a hunter forced to square off with dragons, huge apes, and even gigantic hermit crabs that use dino skulls as shells, using various traps, and weapons to try to bring the hulking beasts down. The entire experience feels even better if you tag up with a friend to bring the monsters down, however that is one of the only ways that you may be able to slay these cratures, because the games difficulty curve sharpens dramatically around the middle of the game, and since there are no ways to level up your character in this game ( your power is based solely on the armor and weapons you equip, and any good weapon requires many difficult to obtain items) a player may be forced to replay difficult levels over, and over again just to get a the materials needed to make a decent sword that will help you deafeat the next nearly impossible boss. In an nut shell, its a cool game with a lot to offer in the ways of weapon and armor creation, has many cool monsters, is easier if you tag up with a friend, but if you play solo, you may be stuck on a few missions for quite a long time. My recommendation is that you rent it or buy it used just to see if its your cup of tea.
