In 2008, EA tried its hand as publishing 2 major new titles, in hopes of establishing fresh franchises for the current gen. The two titles were Dead Space and Mirror's Edge. The timing couldn't be worse, with the world entering a major recession and pessimism quickly shrouded the abilities for these two titles to succeed. Ultimately, a clear winner and loser emerged from the two. Dead Space became a critic's darling, a bright new champion for the action horror genre, and saw its first sequel in 2011. Mirror's Edge, on the other hand, received a mixed reception and did little to impress its publisher.

Mirror's Edge is a first person action platformer. It's a very unique gameplay concept, and it works very well if you're open to practice and the occasional trial and error. You jump from rooftop to rooftop, kick open doors, balance on beams, engage in combat and gunplay (if you choose to) and utilize your agility to traverse the obstacle-laden levels. There are hiccups in the action at times, but when it works, it's an experience unlike any other game and an absolute thrill.

The game itself looks stunning. It takes place in a white washed city future city marked with color accents that leave a lasting impression. Unfortunately, the whatever story in told through cheaply animated sequences that carry little in the way of artistic style. They just look ugly. Otherwise, it's a gorgeous game.

Mirror's Edge will likely linger on as one of this console generation's cult titles. It seems like a lot of people like the idea and ambition, but can't come to terms with the gameplay. I don't get that, as the way the game plays drew me in strongly. It's doubtful that we will see a Mirror's Edge sequel any time soon, or ever, but I have no doubt that the ambition and ideas this title presents will be utilized by some of the finest action games of the 2010s.
