A surprisingly enjoyable beat 'em up that perhaps has a bit too much nostalgia for this reviewer

I originally scoped out this game just for a laugh. Like most kids who grew up in the early 90s I was a huge Power Rangers geek. Sure the acting was terrible, sure the special effects were hideous, sure they butchered the original Sentai content. But hey, it was Power Rangers. So when I was bored one day I picked up a copy of the game just to try out you see.

What I got was a surprisingly enjoyable beat 'em up. The game has scalable difficulty levels, no doubt a necessity considering the original intended target audience - but on the higher difficulties the game can prove to be surprisingly challenging (though nothing that a fan of the genre can't handle)

The game only follows the plot of the first film loosely but it does have cutscenes in between the levels and is somewhat successful at stringing a narrative along. Each stage is rather formulaic for a beat 'em up - you work your way through the level beating up monsters as they come. No real surprises show themselves and your Ranger has only limited attacks but still it is fairly enjoyable. Before each stage you are allowed to select which ranger you want to play as. The characters, as you might suspect, are all characters from the film. But fear not fans of the original show and characters such as Jason, Zack, and Trini. Later on in the game, in a deviation from the film, you are given the opportunity to play as the original characters incorporating a total of nine different selectable characters (though you can only choose from a pool of six at any one time)

So, is the game worth playing? Let us just say that if you see it in a bargain bin for a couple dollars it will keep you mildly amused for a couple hours. It is certainly a better title then the pseudo fighting game that appeared prior to MMPR - The Movie on the Genesis. And if you're like me and my buddies, some nostalgia will kick in.
