Good voice acting, nice fast-paced music, cool sound effects, great graphics and insane challenges. That sums it up.

When I first saw the commercial on TV for Midnight Club 2, it got me thinking: "Hmm... This is from the same company who did GTA and Vice City... it looks pretty good..." But the reluctance about racing games was still hovering around my head. It's not that I dislike racing games, it's just that I'm not good at them. What am I saying, I really suck at them... Trying to rent it was a bit hard, since our friendly neighborhood Blockbuster never had it in, which is usually a sign that the game is good. Eventually, a copy was available and ended up in my hands.

The first thing that came to my mind was "I'm playing The Fast and The Furious". Illegal street racing at its best! You get your nitros to use when your competitors least expect, and the effect it produces around you when you use it is amazing! It's like a mix of tunnel vision with warp speed...

Don't expect your opponents to be easy! They will try to do whatever they can to take you off the race, and there is no way to predict what they will do next. Sometimes it's like the other racers are being controlled by other people and not AI.

The cities look very detailed and realistic! I was especially impressed with the way Paris looked. The map was perfect, from the highway that goes around the city perimeter to the stone paved side streets. Though the smaller streets are missing, the main roads and avenues are there. The monuments are all there, in the exact same spot as they are on a real map: the Louvre, L'Arc du Triomphe (although the large avenue leading to it wasn't as busy in the game as it was when we drove by it!), Sacre-Coeur, Notre-Dame... I was even able to find the spot where we parked near the Eiffel Tower while I was visiting my cousins in Paris!

If you really want to learn your way around this city (and it is not that easy to learn, with all the bridges, tunnels and roads by the Seine), study and memorize a real Paris map. And I'm sure the other cities are the same way, although I never visited any of them.

The replay value is also present in this game, just like in previous Rockstar titles. You can let your creative side run wild in the Race Editor mode. You can create up to 15 original racing events in each unlocked city in the game. Or you can switch to 2-player mode and challenge a friend for a race in the comfort of your couch.

Another advantage of this game is that you can play it online as well, which should make up for some quite interesting challenges. Unfortunately, I didn't have a modem at the time, so I didn't get to try out the online mode.

Good voice acting, nice fast-paced trance and techno music, cool sound effects, great graphics and insane challenges… This sums it up for Midnight Club 2.
