A shameless cash-in on a successful film...

User Rating: 6 | Miami Vice: The Game PSP
I bought this game on an impulse, desperately searching for something to fill the yawning space that the absence of GTA had left in my life. I suppose in all honesty, pretty much any game is going to pale in comparison, but still, Miami Vice: The Game was a MASSIVE letdown.
I guess the fact that it was released before Michael Mann's film (which wasn't all that bad, I thought) gave some indication of what to expect. In short, this game is just a shameless cash-in on a successful film, with no plot similarities at all. Hell, the least they could have done was to make Crockett and Tubbs' characters resemble Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx! It's actually pathetic how bad they look: Crockett looks like some speed-takin' hillbilly and Tubbs, well Tubbs looks like Eddie f@kkin Murphy!
And that's just the start. Graphics aside, the gameplay is also ball-achingly bad. I'm not a big fan of the Resident Evil-style shooting style, and I think the lack of an auto-aim function is really sorely missed. The checkpoints dispersed throughout the level are good, if only because I found myself getting the cr@p blown out of me as I desperately tried to perfect my aim.
Another irritating thing is the limited audio options. The "baddies" feel like they're repeating the same stuff over and over again. It's all a bit repetitive.
From what I've gathered, this game has also been critisised for being overly short. I wouldn't know, cos I haven't finished it. But I can say that the "hacking" mini games within the game do seem like nothing more than a waste of time.
All in all, you'd be best off renting this game before you buy it.
