Kudos to the developers for trying something else (ho-ho) but does Metropolis Street Racer drive like a dream or a Ford?

Metropolis Street Racer is a racing game like no other. Yes such statements have been used for any racing game that’s come out in the last 20 years but this one really is different. For this game is all about kudos and not how fast you drive, rather how you drive - fast! MSR is a game not for a quick fix. There is no arcade mode and it will take a few hours to expose its real depth. The basis consists of 25 chapters where a certain amount of points, or Kudos, need to be earnt before you progress. Tasks range from beating a set lap time to full on tournaments and overtaking challenges. Simply doing them will earn minimal points. To gain more you need to lower the barrier, drive with less crashes and more slick turns. There are also joker cards that can be gained which you can gamble on. Win and gain the double points. Lose and the consequences aren’t even worth thinking about. It is not easy and you’ll be screaming by Chapter 2, ironically dubbed ‘Beginner’. Apart from this fresh approach there are more things that make it special. Extremely precise controls, the ability to earn cars and most importantly the realism. Actual car sounds and actual places. Driving around a virtual London noticing landmarks like the Eye and Column are good indeed and make it that more special as well as fun. Other details such as customisable plates are also a fair treat. However this game came a year late with the constant tweaks and regardless to how excellent it is the Dreamcast could have been better off with this as a launch title. Secondly there is a major bug in the game as embarrassingly it can’t count. This means you’ll need oh so slightly less Kudos than actually required. Okay it isn’t major but some will be very annoyed about it, what with the delays. Still it is a classic, just a flawed one.
