Metroid Zero Mission takes everything good from the original Metroid and improves / expands on it brilliantly

There really isn't any reason to play the classic Metroid anymore. Zero Mission does everything it does and more. It takes the original level design and modifies it just enough to feel fresh and add some new dynamics and extra areas in while keeping the whole original experience intact. It's hard to describe just how well they did this without experiencing it but having played through the first Metroid over five times, I found the older areas familiar enough to navigate without reference, but fresh enough to feel like a new experience.

The game adds a handful of small side areas and then a large new area at the end of the game. It adds a handful of upgrades that weren't available in the original game like power-bombs and super-missiles, but these are incorporated in such a way that doesn't effect the balance of the game. The difficulty remains the same but the pacing is cranked up a small notch due to tighter and more responsive controls.

Overall, this is one of the best Metroids in the series and is a game I continue to come back to and play time and time again. It's just such an enjoyable experience from start to finish that more recent Metroid games have tried and failed to duplicate.
