Metroid Prime, for its time, was simply a stunning and amazing FPS. Eleven years later, that hasn't changed

User Rating: 9 | Metroid Prime GC
A lot of people were appalled at first when Metroid Prime was shown. The reason for this is because it is an FPS entry into a franchise that has traditionally been a side-scrolling action game. When played though, that criticism mostly ceased, as Metroid Prime turned out to not only be an amazing FPS, but also an amazing Metroid game as well.

Game play: 10. When you get past the dramatic change in core game play from 2D side-scroller to FPS, Metroid Prime isn't all that different from other Metroid games; however, it being set in a 3D environment only adds to everything people have loved about previous Metroids: exploration, the feeling of being isolated on a dangerous planet, and, of course, action. You explore the area looking for different things whether they are weapons, keys, or whatever; You will solve puzzles; you will fight hoards of enemies as well as bosses.

The controls are excellent; they are tight. For longtime Metroid fans, it feels like the games have always been FPS's. In today's age though, the controls might feel weird because they are of older FPS's (the main distinction being the lack of dual analog sticks with which to control aiming and moving at the same time with), but you should get used to it pretty fast.

In Prime, you feel truly isolated on Tallon IV. The environments have an awesome design that reflects this tone. There is also plenty of room for exploration.

Presentation: 10. For it's day and age of 2002, these graphics are stunning. And the game's look has aged very well.

The sound effects of the environment really add to the eeriness of Tallon IV. The sound track is also great.

The story is only as deep as the scanning you do. Throughout the entire game, there are things you can read that tell you about what happened on the planet and other stuff.

Value: 8. Prime should take you anywhere from 15 to 18 hours to complete on the normal difficulty. I think the game is worth playing again on hard.

PROS:
Great atmosphere
Perfect controls
Great presentation
CONS:
It isn't longer

Metroid Prime is a game I would recommend to anyone who likes FPS's. It is an excellent game.
