This minimalistic puzzle game will mess with your mind.

User Rating: 8 | Metrico+ PS4

Metrico is a minimalistic puzzle game where every action has a reaction. This unique blend of platforming and puzzles is quite the brain teaser. There is a lot of trail and error. Once you get the the hang of things you'll start to get quite creative and try just about anything to get the results you need. If the clever puzzles wasn't enough Metrico also offers a wild story-line slowly teased out through the game. This may be a fairly niche experience but those with an open mind will certainly be in for a treat.

Your movement in this game starts out limited to just walking and jumping. Yet you'll notice that different pieces of the environment will react based on which direction you walk, how far you fall, and how often you respawn. As you progress you'll slowly unlock a couple new mechanics. This does mean you have more things to keep track of but the beauty in Metrico's design is that you're never overwhelmed with options. Knowing you only have a handful of tricks makes even the toughest puzzles feel doable.

Not often do you see a side-scrolling platformer combined with a puzzle game. Metrico will mess with any preconceived notions you many have for side-scrollers. For example you many try to jump on a box just to have it move father away or you many need to walk left to pull in a platform on your right. It is a bit trippy at first but after the a couple chapters you'll be trying all sorts of crazy things to move pieces around.

The story, or what this is of one, is actually really cool. Instead of coming up with anything dialog driven you're instead shown a very strange series of interactive scenes between chapters. Lets just say that your character is in a transitional phase and there seems to be consequences. It all leads up to one of the best endings I've experienced in a puzzle game. The music isn't too bad either but when you get stuck on a puzzle it can be quite annoying hearing the same tune on repeat.

Just one look at Metrico and you'll probably know if its the right game for you. Its very logic driven forcing you to both learn each variable and use them in very particular orders. The polygonal levels are so simple yet they are quite pleasant to behold. The music is fine as well, assuming you don't stay in one area too long. The game probably took me about eight to ten hours to complete and I absolutely felt I got my moneys' worth. Metrico+ feels challenging through-out while never feeling insurmountable.
