A brilliant example of storytelling and action game play.

User Rating: 9.5 | Metal Gear Solid (Premium Package) PS
Metal Gear Solid, the game released in 1999 is simply an example of how to make a great video games. Firstly, it pulls the players in with an interesting gameplay idea. Instead of other games at the time where your objective was to rack a kill count to make Arnie look like Ghandi, this was a game where your key to survival was stealth.

The game itself is presented from a top down view, and you'll be seeing most of the gameplay like this. The stealth gameplay is excellently balanced with some key moments of tension such as sneaking around a group of guards to action sequences against Boss Fights. With some of the best boss fights on the Playstation 1, these are not to be missed with a manic variety from a fist fight with a Cyborg Ninja to a sniper duel in the Tundra.

Another important part of this game is the sheer emphasis on storytelling on a scale not seen before. You'll spend allot of the time watching great cut scenes play out, not the majority mind you, but a lot. This may sound like a bore but when you've got cut scenes like Metal Gear it is always worth watching.

If you haven't played this game, you're missing out on a real gem. If you're really badly turned off by the graphical prowess of the Playstation 1, you can always go and get the Twin Snakes, it may not be as good as the original but it does a pretty good job as capturing the feel of the game.
