Although it's pretty poor as a stealth game, Metal Gear Solid offers up a great plot and great boss battles.

Metal Gear Solid, it's a series I have a love hate relation ship with. Although I abhor Metal Gear Solid 4. I think Metal Gear Solid 2 got the stealth gameplay spot on, and Metal Gear Solid 3 was almost perfect.

So we begin with Metal Gear Solid, a game that feels like a stealth remake of Metal Gear 2. (no pun intended)

The storyline in Metal Gear Solid is interesting....until all the gene business comes into play. For you see, Kojima knows NOTHING about Dominant and Recessive genes. But either way, there are enough good plot twists to keep you on your toes.

The boss battles, oh yes, Metal Gear Solid's boss battles have always been a staple of the series, and with good reason. Kojima's battles aren't just monsters to slow down the pacing, these battles actually have depth and are well placed and no one boss has you doing the same thing. It's a nice change of pace from "Shoot weakpoint until dead."

But the stealth itself is pretty poor, for one thing, the guards can only see about 10 meters in front of them and you can run over anything and they'll only be mildly annoyed, therefore breaking the stealth.

And you can't walk......*sigh.*

And at the end there is a action sequence where you have to gun down soldiers at checkpoints, it works horribly because the controls are custom made for stealth (not walking) and the action is annoying, and when Snake is shot he flinches which is the most ANNOYING thing ever.

Metal Gear Solid is broken, but so immersive that I find myself blowing through it because sneaking past guards is fun, no matter what game you play, Thief, Splinter Cell, Syphon Filter, the thrill of sneaking past enemies and knowing that they will be fired for being terrible guards is funner than gunning down the entire room.
