Metal Gear Solid: Days of Our Lives.

User Rating: 6.5 | Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (Platinum) PS3
Having played recently just went through the entire Metal Gear Solid series in the MGS Legacy collection, I finally got to sit down and play MGS4, what many would describe as a masterpiece. I was left with a rather shallow third person shooter experience which frequently broke up the action in the form of long winded often times melodramatic cinematic cutscenes. A masterpiece should not be judged solely on budget.

MGS4 does have some really great features that improve upon the core gameplay of the past titles. The eye patch that snake receives has different modes such as night vision which allows the player to spot enemies more easily in adverse conditions such as a blizzard or the dark. The game also drags Snake to a variety of different locations, new and old, and brings back almost every character from past metal gear games in some shape or form. The sneaking, while unnecessary, has been given an extra layer with the updated camouflage mechanic; however, if spotted it's easier to just blast your way through enemies as the game controls much more smoothly than past games, allowing the player to walk while shooting. Even the boss battles which are usually a staple of the series for myself, boil down to firefights that usually don't involve any special skill in order for success.

Unfortunately, no matter how greatly improved the controls are you won't really be spending much time with them. I completed the game in 14.5 hours. The game has 9.1 hours of cutscenes, so 62% of the time I was passively watching characters talk or an action sequence. Much of the dialogue is melodramatic dribble and is dragged on to the brink of ridicule. The end cinematic is approximately and hour and 10 minutes... Most video game narratives are bad, but many time gameplay is used as a counterbalance; however, I think Hideo Kojima really thought he had something, yet this gritty wartime drama is filled with fart jokes and sappy predictable lines that belong in a daytime soap opera like Days of Our Lives.

With only about 5.5 hours of actual gameplay, it's hard to recommend this unless you really really like the series' story and rather watch the story unfold than play the game.
