Boy, this is a tough one. Not in terms of game difficulty (although it is), mind you, but in how to review it. Never before have I been so conflicted by things I loved and hated about a game. It's a fantastic over-the-top action game with flashy swordplay and some of the best console graphics I've seen this generation, but unfortunately it's saddled with one of the most awful and intrusive stories I've ever seen in a game, period. You are Raiden, a cyborg badass who is working with a PMC tasked with protecting some political figure. Things go wrong and Raiden takes it upon himself to hunt down the PMC that ruined everything for him and uncovers a larger political plot. The story is basically a vehicle for the action.

Unfortunately, the game treats the story like the action is a vehicle for it, stopping the player after basically every fight scene to either have a boring codec conversation or show a visually impressive, albeit stupid cutscene. On the bright side, codec conversations can be ran through quickly by holding down triangle and cutscenes can be skipped entirely.

Despite how the story is told, the action in the game is absolutely fantastic. It's fast and frantic, and every punishment you receive feels well-deserved. There's a well implemented parry system and score rankings at the end of every fight, telling you how well (or terribly) you did. Barring all cutscenes, the game doesn't overstay its welcome at 4 hours. The game is highly replayable and also features VR missions that are unlocked through items in the main campaign, which are a nice distraction.

In a sentence, it's another excellent action game from Platinum, but they focus way too much on story, probably due to its Metal Gear pedigree.

Verdict: Not recommended for Metal Gear fans, but action game fans should get a kick out of it.
