Probably the most played game of my life.

Having been a devout Sonic fan in my youth, I missed out on the SNES version of this game, and the ensuing madness that accompanied it. Before obtaining the 64 version, me and my partner never could have imagined how much this game would take over our lives. The whole thing is just fun, and lasting fun. The power-ups are perfect, the tracks challenging, and the characters and cars look fantastic. Everything moves well, with limited slowdown and only a few minor glitches here and there. Overall the presentation, particularly for its time, is immaculate.
The various characters and their vehicles are easy to control, and feature various speed boosts and a drift function, which makes tearing around the corners some serious fun.
Seeing as it was released back in 1996, Mario Kart 64 has more than stood the test of time. I have not come across and Kart racing game after it - Mario based or otherwise, that has come anywhere near close to topping it. This is absolutely essential to anyone with a Nintendo 64, and stands as the greatest Kart racer of all-time.
