Mario Golf is actually pretty good. There are countless of Mario games and not all of them are worth playing, but this is definitely one of the better Mario sports games. The gameplay is very balanced, this is what makes it a good game. You choose which club you are going to use, what direction to hit. You have to take wind and terrain in account. Hitting the gulfball is a matter of timing. You have to press the button at the right time as indicated on a bar.
The courses are as you might expect typical Mario courses with lots of plumming pipes and piranha plants. Very much like Super Mario Land. This works very well in this game. You can play the game by yourself, but it's more fun with friends, because then you have some competition going. Playing alone can also be fun and there are plenty of characters and stuff to unlock.
I must warn you though that this is a Gulf game and as such it is a game of concentration and a somewhat slow pace and not everybody is into that. Therefor you might want to rent it first or play it at a friend's house.
