I did not play mario golf 64, so I can't tell you if mario golf is like it or not, but I can tell you that this is the worst Golf game I have played of the cube so far. Nintendo and Camelot did do a good job with sound, music, and game play. But, the controls are were they really mess up on. Unlike Outlaw and Tiger Woods golf which both use the C stick to give you full control over the game, they went with a slide power bar that you have to time out you shot hitting the A than A again for a auto swing, or A than B and B for the manual swing. Which is a lot for a 18 hole round of Golf! You will also have to press the A or B one more time if you want to add a back or top spin to the ball. All of that is not even adding how much you have to do just to line up the shot. If you are Mature 18+ to play a game like Outlaw Golf I can not recommend this game, but if you are a little young and not a big Golf fan to try the tiger wood games you may find some fun out of this game as so as you get pass the sub par controls. My final score for Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour is a C ( 6.5) it not a bad game but the controls and some sub par voice and dialog just bring the game down, but I still recommend renting it and find out if the controls are a problem for you or not. Just because a game has a Mario name does not mean that it is the best thing out there for the Game cube, the only reason I can think they used this kind of control is they want you to be use to the new Game boy advance Mario Golf game that will be out latter this year which sound like it has some promising add on with the GC GBA link cable.
