Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games could of been improved more.

User Rating: 5.5 | Mario & Sonic at Vancouver Olympics WII
Presentation - Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games is a sequel for the series to hit up on the Wii. I was disappointed that you can't do Wi-Fi in this game. That's really a shame because it could have attracted more hardcore and casual players alike. Although you can connect to the internet and compare your ranks from across the country, you still can't psychically play against people from around the world. There are about a total of 20 Olympic events, and some of them are the dream events. They added mostly skiing and snowboarding games, but they also included curling, figure skating, snowball fight, dream gliding, and a few others.

There is also a single player mode where you can use the balance board to play some of the events, but multiplayer mode isn't compatible for using the board. You still can have up to four players in the regular Olympic and dream events. The party mode is where the game randomly selects an event for you and your friends. After each mini-game is over, you get to play a short game like balloon pop to try to earn the most points. Story mode is also included, and you try to complete events and challenge rivals.

Graphics- The character models look decent and well animated. Most of the environments look realistic and clean, but the audience members are somewhat pixilated and messy looking. I also noticed that my character gets covered up in snow sometimes. Overall, the graphics are decent, but the backgrounds are slightly messy and pixilated looking.

Sound - The music that constantly loops while you choose a character and event doesn't sound very appealing to me. First, it doesn't really sound like Olympic theme music, and it sounds more childish and annoying to listen to over and over again. In figure skating, you can select from a few classic tracks like Swan Lake, but the music selection is somewhat limited. You can also purchase Mario and Sonic tunes at the shopping mode along with costumes, board customizations, and the history of the Olympics. Overall, the music doesn't sound very impressing. The character voices are still very repetitive and can get annoying to listen to. I also noticed that Luigi kind of makes squeaking noises sometimes when I play as him in the Olympic events.

Game play - The controls are still responsive most of the time, but other times they kind of jerk around. However, the controls work better on the Wii remote than the balance board, and they respond a lot more efficiently. For example, when I do a Skiing event on the balance board, sometimes my character constantly moves left and right. That can make it slightly difficult to control my character occasionally.

Lasting appeal - Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games could of been improved more. The variety in the Olympic events is decent, but the lack of online play, weak music selection, and occasionally frustrating controls bring the experience down.

The good - a great variety of events and modes to play with friends, graphics look decent overall

The bad - no online play even if you can do online ranks from others around the world, music doesn't sound appealing, the controls are slow and wonky sometimes, backgrounds look somewhat messy and pixilated, balance board is only compatible for single player
