Fast paced first person shooter. Massive play field. Excellent detail. Multi-player only.

MAG is another of the military style first person shooter where you pick one of three factions then fight it out with other factions to the death. This is an on-line only game that requires broadband so there is no single player missions or story per se. I am using 4GB DSL and it seems to work out fine. However, the game updates are a PAIN because they take so long to download.

Right off the bat the feel is similar to Modern Warfare but the player is able to select and modify his character to his liking. Unfortunately, there are no female characters. Choice of weapons and upgrades are very similar to MW as are the controls. That is about where the similarities end. Your weapons are better, more accurate, and shoot straighter. If you snipe a player and that dot is on his head.... he is dead. If you are wounded there is no auto health re-generation. You can either heal yourself with a med gun or another player can do it. Also, if your near death, another player can "fix" you and back to fighting you go.

You not only have a choice of weapons, you have different levels of armor, helmets, battle clothing, classes, goggles, and colors of each to choose from. Each item you pick either lightens your character or weighs him down. Too heavy and your a turtle in a fire fight. Too little and your a fish in a barrel. Also, you are able to drive vehicles in this shooter unlike many other the other popular fps games.

Unfortunately, there are a few things that detract from the game. Such as a time limit in each battle. You can be in the middle of an all out knock down drag out when the timer starts running out everything comes to an end. This is VERY frustrating. I would like to see the timer removed and the fight go on for as long as it takes for one side or the other to win. In some instances the timer should be extended. Also, during each battle you earn XP or experience points so you can buy better gear for your character. At the rate you accumulate the points it will take a VERY long time to get any gear that will help you. You have to have thousands of XP to get a better weapon or armor. Something else I ran across is that you must purchase extra player slots in the game if you want 1 or 2 more characters. You also must purchase some upgrades in the PlayStation store if you want some of the newer stuff. The free BETA upgrade from the PlayStation store, when downloaded, takes about 3 hours. Then you must let it install which can take an hour or more. If it was like mine, the install failed twice and I had to start all over for a total of 8 hours of wasted time.

Update: The MAG beta is closed. After wasting more time downloading everything again and letting it install, an announcement came up at the beginning of the game that it ended September 22. Thanks for letting us know in advance!

To sum it up... MAG is worthy of your time. For $30 it seems to be a pretty good deal.
