Room for improvement but it's still a good game

User Rating: 7 | Mafia III XONE

The biggest thing for me going into this game was the story. Mafia 2, at least to me, has got to be the most satisfying story I have ever played in a video game. Mafia 3 has to at least partially live up to those high expectations and it totally does. Through the intro missions alone, You are familiarized with the characters, the gameplay and the epic story to come. I absolutely loved the introduction to this game because it sucked in you and took you head first into the world. And it doesn't let up until you finish it.

Now the journey from beginning to end can be a bit tedious. The missions were a little repetitive, I felt the game took a bit too long at times with these side-missions you needed to complete in order to get to the next story mission. For the most part, I didn't object to all this filler. To me, The game was so satisfying to play that the enjoyment I have over-shadows the repetitiveness of the missions.

And speaking of the gameplay, I have to take a shot at the Gamespot review and how the reviewer called the gameplay "dated". It's very similar to the GTA 5 gameplay, Which was highly praised. Does the lack of originality in the gameplay hurt it? No, and that's because the game is fun to play. It's a blast getting into a shootout or having to fight someone hand to hand. I love it and not in slightest do I feel that the gameplay is dated. Lacks originality? For sure but it's still fun to play.

I do agree though that despite having an original and massive open world that fits the era perfectly, There isn't much to do and in a way that is both positive and negative. The Mafia series isn't about that. They don't need to load the world with repetitive side-objectives to make the game a satisfying experience to go through. And that's the beauty of it. Mafia 3 delivers a satisfying single player experience that is gonna keep you invested for a minimum of 40 hours so you are definitely gonna get your money's worth.

The patches in the game solved nearly all of the bugs, crashing issues that affected it at launch, Which I think is why the game was knocked down in the overall score. I have no issues with bugs or anything of that nature. I did have a bit of lag once and a while but it's so far and in between that I honestly didn't care. It's nothing that I don't experience playing a game like Grand Theft Auto. I am a bit disappointed that a fast travel system wasn't implemented into the game. It would have saved a lot of time and quicken the pace of the game a bit.

Overall: 7/10
My only complaints about this game are the repetitiveness of the missions and the lack of a fast travel system. Aside from that, Mafia 3 provides such a quality story that that aspect alone makes it worth playing. It's a fun open world game but not the kind that you are gonna put 100+ hours into.
