A great game anyone can appreciate

User Rating: 8.3 | Lemmings PSP
Lemmings is an interesting game that has been around for almost as long as Mario. Many people probably have fond memories playing this game on many different consoles. I for instance, remember playing Lemmings for the PC with my departed grandfather when I was about 8. If you don't already know, Lemmings is a game about these characters called Lemmings (which really don't resemble real life Lemmings but still have the same suicidal tendencies) that will walk in one direction until they hit a wall or fall or walk into a deathtrap. Sounds kinda morbid, huh? In the game, you have to save as many Lemmings as possible by getting them from point A to the exit. You can assign each Lemming one of 8 jobs that help get them to the exit.

Lemmings really seems right at home on the PSP. With the power of the PSP, you can have many levels (156 to be exact) and have updated graphics. While the graphics arent mindblowing, they are colorful, each Lemming is distinguishable, and the backgrounds and levels look vey sharp. The sound consists of some classic Lemmings songs, and they sound great. The Lemmings also make noises, some of the best being when they commit suicide.

The control scheme in the game works quite nicely. The shoulder buttons shift through the jobs, the X button is the action button, circle is fast forward , triangle zooms on the level, and square (hold) locks onto a single Lemming. The analog stick is used to move the camera around the level, and the D-pad is used to move the cursor. Having the D-Pad move the cursor works quite well, but it feels a bit slow sometimes. An option to use the analog stick to control the cursor and a sensitivity setting would have been nice.

Lemmings games usually have some sort of multiplayer funtion, but Lemmings PSP doesnt. This is a shame since multiplayer PSP Lemmings would be great. However, if you have no friends with a PSP, this is no problem. Also, the game has only 36 new maps, and compared to 120 original maps (read: probably already played before), this doesnt seem like a lot. Luckily, you can download maps online or make your own. I havnt tried either of these functions so I cant properly evaluate them.

Lastly, the difficulty. The game is easy to learn to play, and the first many levels are quite easy. However, once you start getting up in the harder levels, the game can get very difficult. No matter the difficulty, them game is always fun. If you love Lemmings, or haven't played it before, I highly reccomend it.

P.S.: According to the Gamespot review, assigning functions while the game is paused is a new function. IT ISNT. This function has been around since the Genesis version of lemmings, and possibly before. Even with this function, the game does not get significantly easier.
