A "watered down" Lego Marvel Superheroes.

User Rating: 6 | LEGO Marvel's Avengers PS4

# Lego Marvel Superheroes released on consoles couple years back and received great praise for its diverse cast of characters, most who could perform their own specific super powers and each character had their own "feel" to them. I regret not being able to say the same about Lego Avengers.

To be fair, Avengers is a good game, on the borderline of great. It offers a ton of characters to find and unlock and the story is decent. But the biggest complaint I have is the repetition in almost everything about this game. No longer is Sandman present who can make himself turn into a sand castle, gone are the days of playing as Dr. Octopus and having those tentacles flailing about. Instead, we get like 30 different looking but for the most part same functioning Iron Man costumes. And the game makes it appear as those different costumes are all different characters. Ha, think again, a lot of the slots where characters are unlocked are going to turn out to be a slightly different version of the one you already have. This is such a letdown considering how awesome the roster was on Superheroes and the vast set of abilities players had to choose from. Sure, there are a few surprises here and there, such as Squirrel Girl and her giant robot suit. But I know I felt kinda ripped off after spending countless hours getting studs and collecting all the valuables only to unlock the same functioning character I already have. Avengers does this a lot and this is my biggest criticism.

Another issue is the shorter story. The missions you will partake in will have you all over the globe... Korea, Washington D.C, Africa & many other locales. The story is basically identical to that of the film, and these missions, although simple, are kind of fun in that silly, harmless Lego kind of way. 10 Minikits are on each level and to find some are indeed tricky but is a walk in the park for most. To 100% a level takes time and patience and of course, the right character tokens. The problem is the span of Avenger's story is too short. The depth and wide variety of missions we saw on Superheroes is replaced with like 10 main game based levels. The DLC adds about 5 more but it just seems that there could have been so much more and that this was a rushed project.

Players can still partake in races, side quests and still have access to a ship where the main Avengers team gives orders from. There is a nice addition in the fact that there are now several different "HUB" areas as Legos call them. Now, players can travel to Washington D.C, Manhattan, Africa, Malibu, and even Asgard (Thor's homeworld) and freely complete side missions and unlock characters and studs. This is a step up from Superheroes single level of New York.

So, in a nutshell, Avengers does good at bringing the usual. It fails at bringing anything new and sadly at bringing anything creative. What Avengers will try to do is fool everyone into thinking they have a huge cast full of different characters with their own special & unique super powers. Don't be let down and don't fall for it. This is a farce, Avengers fails on the characters. It leaves me wondering if I should have invested as many hours into this game as I did, as I don't feel very rewarded. All in all, its an average game, but when put in comparison with Superheroes, its light is easily in the shadows of Superheroes.
