Fails to take advantage of what the premise has to offer

User Rating: 4 | LEGO DC Super-Villains (Deluxe Edition) XONE

DC Super-Villains is yet another addition to the Lego video game franchise and one of the blandest yet. In this game, as obviously stated in the title, the villains are the main characters with a story focusing on your customer character joining these iconic villains for the ride. Sadly, The premise of the game does very little to really take advantage of what it could have possibly had to offer.

So the most improved feature in the game is character customization, which makes sense because the story does focus on a created character. And while they certainly made great strides to make it the best the Lego series has ever had to offer, It also made me feel like certain aspects of the game was neglected to make it better. More specifically, the vehicle/flying controls.

The vehicle and flying controls honestly ruin what could have been quite enjoyable races and definitely bring down the standard Lego gameplay as a whole. There is no progressively speeding up, Instead, you are going 0 to 60 and having to adjust on the fly. The slightest touch of the controls can send you veering off hard in one direction when you only meant to do an adjustment or small turn. It can make things frustrating at times and it was to the point where I honestly never touched a vehicle outside of races. While flying is only slightly better than driving, It was quicker and allowed for faster travel. On a side note, Why this game doesn't have a fast travel feature is beyond me. It would have made traversing the map a lot simpler.

The campaign is as standard as the gameplay with a forgettable story that does not take advantage of either the iconic characters or the great cast voicing them. This was a huge flaw for me because the Lego series often lacks compelling stories, especially if it isn't based on a film series. I was hoping that they'd do something different and better this time around but sadly, They didn't. And on top of that, Your customer character, which is supposed to be the central character of the story, often feels like a backdrop to things and is utterly useless outside of the story. Why was the focus so heavily on this feature when it ultimately ended up being totally needless? Just let us play as whatever character is featured in the mission like every other Lego game and leave it at that. It would have been better TBH.

The only real plus that I found in this game is the cutback on the amount of story-related collectibles (5 mini kits instead of the standard 10) and the thankfully less cluttered hub world that also doesn't feature as many collectibles either. This really helped ease the post-campaign grind and made it so I didn't utterly hate the game after completing it.

Overall: 4/10
Lego DC Super-Villains is the kind of game that is truly your basic Lego game. It offers nothing unique or original. It's just bland.
