In a series of games as good as the Mana games, this one is somewhat of a letdown.

Since the SNES days, the Mana series has rocked. In my opinion, Seiken Densetsu 3 is one of the greatest RPGs of all time. It had everything: multiplayer support, great storyline/graphics, tons of replay value, etc.... Legend of Mana, however, is very disappointing in comparison. In fact, it hardly stands up on its own. The gameplay is, admittedly, fun.. at times. The battles are fast paced, real time, hack fests. There is a fun skill system underlying it, but it just wasnt tapped into enough. You will spend almost no time beating this game. It is exceedingly easy, most bosses die very, very fast, and normal enemies are pushovers. The biggest downside of gameplay is the fact that the story is... well, crap. In fact, it is hard to tell if there really is a story at all. Basically you get items to put onto a world map, these items turn into new cities, in which you get new items to make your world map bigger. Big whoop. Storyline = 0. I have played real time strategy games with more in depth storylines than this game. There is almost no character development either, which is very, very disappointing because each and every character LOOKS great. Graphics: Speaking of looks, the graphics are pretty neat. Hand drawn sprites are done very well, and make this a very good looking game for the PSX. Sound: Also disappointing is the sound, the effects rarely seem to fit for what the actions are going on screen, and the music is forgettable at best. Value: Again, it suffers, for the insanely short amout of time you will play this game, 20$ seems like a rip off. Tilt: It is moderately enjoyable, but it is hard to call a game like this 'good'... its ease and lack of gameplay really disappointed me. Even if you judged this having not played the previous games, it is still disappointing.
