Classic pure goodness adventure gaming.

User Rating: 8.5 | King's Quest Collection PC
It's very hard to pin down this one, because it's really a collection of the first 7 King's Quest games. So rather than trying to write about the collection as a whole, I'll briefly review each of the games in just a short paragraph:

King's Quest I: The Quest for the Throne - The first KQ was a very original departure from classic text-driven adventure games, and a welcome one, at that. The story could be a bit better, though, and it was really, really short. Score: 7.0

King's Quest II: Romancing the Throne - A much better story, with better puzzles and at least twice the length of the original one. If only it didn't have a "guessing" stairway game right at the end, it would get a much higher score. (Those who played it know what I mean). Score: 7.5

King's Quest III: To Heir is Human - Now we're talking. A great story, only plagued by the need of using a very boring copy protection embedded into the game (but once you're through it, it doesn't return!). This one's got better classic fairy tales references, and the puzzles are as good as your average Lucasfilm game. Score: 8.5

King's Quest IV: The Perils of Rosella - Only topped by KQ6, this game is a classic example of why we all loved Sierra back in the day. A great story with even greater puzzles, and, like a cherry to top it all, actually funny. Score: 9.5

King's Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder - I guess they really had a rush of releasing a VGA-compatible game, because this one feels half-baked. Sure, it had it's moments (the magic duel rocked), but overall it got a "meh" reaction from me at first, and it still does. Score: 7.0

King's Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow - The longest and best game in the KQ series, with an insuperable story and great (and I mean even greater than most of Lucasfilm's) puzzles. The music score was also very nice. Score: 10.0 (yes, a 10... back in the day, you just couldn't dream of anything better)

King's Quest VII: The Princeless Bride - Great animation, but only so-so story and puzzles. This one clearly shows the downfall of this great series. Score: 6.5
