Arguably as much of a must-own Megadrive game as Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat 2.

King of the Monsters is not a cerebral game. There are no maddeningly complex puzzles, no captivating story.

You are a monster. Think, say, Godzilla. And the city is your plaything. Plus some other monster, though beating them up is nowhere near as satisfying

Its a screamingly simple premise - crush, smash and destroy - and to be honest it could have been executed considerably better, but it such a simple joy to play.

There is something absurdly thrilling in 2 player mode, where its difficult to resist the temptation to call a truce and level the city ("I want to smash the bridge!!!") before turning on each other.

King of the Monsters is far from the prettiest fighting game, and considering it was released the same year as Street Fighter II: Special Championship edition the graphics and lack of depth are difficult to defend - the fighting move sets are smaller than Golden Axe's, never mind comparing them to Streets of Rage or Mortal Kombat . The music and sound effects are acceptable, though forgettable. And its predictable, the characters are sluggish and have very limited sets of moves

But its hard to stop playing. Sometimes all you want is a big dumb fighting game. And on the Megadrive you won't find anything bigger or dumber. This is a game of a B movie and a "B movie" of a game, and in my eyes its equal parts cult classic and guilty pleasure.
