User Rating: 9.2 | Kessen III PS2
Kessen, one of the first Strategy games for the Ps2. Excellent is many ways but faulty as well. This latest installment attempts to change the whole "attack here, do this" method of the previous titles. Gameplay: As previously stated, the game presents itself in a new way. Instead of telling your officers were to go and who to attack, you actually can control the units(And is key for victory). This adds more of an action element to the game but at the same time also adds even more strategy as it deals with real time battles. It has a non-linear battle selection which works in it's favor. This allows you to practice or gain experience with your officers before you head into a major battle. The officer system is also tweaked a bit. Officers that are used repeatedly can become wounded and thus causing their stats to fall until they have rested a bit. This requires you to use more than the same officers over and over again, adding more strategy to the game. It also has an equipment system and In my opinion it is the most welcomed addition to the game. There are over 450 items total and they include armor, weapons, helms, and accessories. They do change your appearance of your officers during battle and add into stats at the same time. Story: The game is set in feudal japan in a time before the first Kessen. You play as a young lord named Oda Nobunaga, who is destined to unite Japan. The story is very interesting and is wrought with plenty plot curves and betrayal. Graphics: The cinematics are nothing short of flawless, Beautiful in every way. There are 2+ hours of these magnificent movies throughout the game and they really help move along the story. The In game graphics are better than the previous titles but they are not the best I've seen on the Ps2. They have a bit of jag here and there but nothing terrible. Sound: The sounds in this game are fantastic. Be it the wonderful music or the sounds of troops clashing and dieing. Some of the Officer voices can get a bit annoying but they are done well. I am impressed with the dubs overall and that + the music gets it a 9 in sound. Value: The game has a great story, about 20+ hours of gameplay, unlock-ables and a battle selection mode. It is worth the 50$ as it is a major improvement to the Kessen series and one fans should not miss. Tilt: I love this game, I'm a fan of the series and I have noticed the great changes that have been made. It can appeal to those who don't like just telling your troops where to move and attack but it can also appeal to the people who love strategy as it is the core of the game.
