User Rating: 8.9 | Karaoke Revolution Volume 3 PS2
It's kind of hard to review this game taking into consideration GameSpot's 5 review tenets, so I won't. I'll just have to leave it up to you to trust this review or dismiss it. Karaoke Revolution Vol. 3 is basically an expansion of 2. The premise is the same, however there is a new song list to choose from. There is even a bonus song available for fans of another Konami game franchise... how sneaky of them! As the title implies, this game is all about singing, and you are judged on your ability to stay in pitch and on time. This can be difficult if you are a male trying to sing Michael Jackson's ABC lyrics, but it never gets frustrating -- it's funny more than anything. The varying game modes allow you to sing full or abbreviated versions of the songs by yourself, against opponents or even in a duet. This is a party game. It can be fun playing by yourself, but I imagine unless you love to hear the sound of your own voice the fun could wear off in an hour or so. This game is truly meant to be played with people -- lots and lots -- as it supports up to 8 players. And that is definitely where the replay value comes in. In fact, this game is all about replay value. With only about 20 songs, it's all about outsinging your friends to get the most points. Another bit of value I find in this game is actually as a tool to become a better singer. I don't know about you, but I don't have pipes like Seal or Usher; so, it's cool to hear what you actually sing like. And while the pitch/timing meter isn't perfect, it's good enough to show you how good or terrible you are actually singing. It's like any other rhythm/music game, except it has voice recognition - which really adds a cool dimension to it. Finally, I really found it fun singing with my wife. With duets like "I got you babe" and "You're the one that I want", the game takes on a whole new aspect. In addition, love songs like "Unchained Melody" are just great to sing to your significant other. And that's the point of this game. It is meant to be shared and played with other people. It encourages us to come out of our shells and laugh at each other or to sing a heartwarming rendition to the one we love. This is really in a class all itself, and is a lot better than I gave it credit for. Although this cannot be reviewed in the same vein as a Halo or other game of that nature, the bottomline is if you like to sing in the shower you should get this game.
