A great atmosphere held back by monotonous gun-play and an underwhelming story

User Rating: 5.5 | Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days PC
Like it's predecessor, Kane & Lynch 2 retains the dark and gritty atmosphere which set the came apart from many other 3rd person shooters. While the whole film noir thing has been done before, I don't think it's possible to think of a game where it has been more confronting than in K&L 2.

Despite the great atmosphere and the character of the protagonists, the story is somewhat lacking: it is essentially very simple and drawn out by a series of "screw-ups" which make you feel like you're waiting for something to happen.

In addition to this, the gunplay is extremely mundane and annoying. Most guns are extremely inaccurate, so you'll often find yourself just taking cover, spraying an area with bullets and repeating this process until the baddies are dead -- seriously! The process is extremely unrewarding.

Another peeve is that the buildup of the game and story has a pretty much non-existent ending. After you accomplish what you understand to be a generally small objective, the game goes instantly to the credits, as it turns out the game's over. Very, very disappointing.

While there are definitely things to like about this game (eg. graphics have been improved upon), in my mind it simply fails as a game in the sense that it is not fun to play.
