A Rollicking Good Time!

User Rating: 9 | Just Cause 3 PS4

Although I think that the influx of gaming choices for the Playstation 4 have been disappointing so far, Just Cause 3 has to be one exception!

Before reading on, it's important to realise that any degree of strategy in gameplay or substance to create a decent story for this particular game is not what was ever intended here. Right from the start, this is tellingly evident. You play as character Rico, a one man army on a mission to eliminate a mad dictator by the name of Di Ravello. That's your plot. Now, one should prepare for carnage!

Just Cause 3 has an easy to grasp control scheme, which was logically needed in order to have explosive fun. The story is really just an excuse to blow things up, and there is plenty of that...from start to almost finish. There are many weapons and vehicles on offer which are given to you by a system called the Rebel Drop List. If anybody remembers playing Mercenaries 2, it is pretty similar. You are rewarded with beacons every time you free up a settlement or town. These are used to spend on the previously mentioned.

Honestly, you could complete the whole game using the game's most basic of weapons but the fun is elevated when you upgrade! To navigate around the in-game map, you are given a wingsuit and grappling line which are welcome additions, given the size of the map. It may just be me but I rarely used vehicles, instead opting to use my grappling line and parachute for most of the game but once you complete the campaign and left with any extra content to achieve then it is pretty pleasant in discovering the vehicles on offer, which range from a banged up economy right up to an F1 racing car. Planes and helicopters greatly assist you in combat, especially if they are equipped with onboard guns and missiles.

Graphically, there is plenty of detail in Just Cause 3, taking advantage of the new system's advanced graphical chips. There are now details on things such as vehicle registration plates and the dashboard in vehicles are much more defined. Considering the game is all about gunplay, action and huge explosions the graphics are actually quite important for this genre. But they don't let the player down!

Cut scenes are involved to explain why you have just blown up, or about to destroy your millionth gas tank or enemy ridden military truck and thankfully you are given the choice to skip them. When you have completed the game once, there will be little need to view them again. In fact, they eventually become a distraction from all the fun!

If all you are looking for is some light hearted violent entertainment then Just Cause 3 is the right game for you. The action is almost constant and the replay value is high! Fans looking for something with a little more depth in the narrative will want to look elsewhere, however.
