I've been looking forward to a decent monster hunting and raising game on the PS2 for a while. Jade Cocoon 2 fulfills that role pretty decently with a unique combat system. The encounters aren't random, but I do wish they didn't get stuck at the entrance of a room, trying to "chase" you. However, the storyline and plot tend to veer towards the weaker side. I was sitting there, wondering why the main character was facing his literal inner demon with his Divine Beasts. I mean, be a man and duke it out yourself! Oh well. There is some character development, but not enough for it to be praise-worthy.
Main character is getting turned into a monster? Yawn. You have to beat the crud out of semi-cute dragon girl? Snooze. Crazy rival kid with attention issues? Time to get a drink. Much admired mentor has been possessed? Zzz.
This could have been better, although I still have to give them props for not looking like a total Pokemon or Digimon knock-off.
