Injustice does a lot of things right, but ultimately feels a bit slow compared to it's NetherRealm Studios brother.

On it's own, this game is fantastic. Controls are easy to pick up, balance between characters is just right, and the story mode offers a plethora of cameos that act as nice short breaks between the fights. I have to throw it out there, that if you take this game on by itself, you'll have a blast. For a fan of DC Comics, or as a fan of 2D Fighting games, this is a rich experience.

I, however, did not have the luxury of going into this game quite as open minded. I came into this as a long time fan of the Mortal Kombat franchise, particularly of the latest iteration done by the aforementioned NetherRealm studios. All that being said, I'll delve into some of the pros and cons.

The biggest thing here that bothered me were the controls, while easy to pick up, they didn't seem nearly as fluid as NR Studios' previous work. Sometimes it feels as if you become trapped in your own movements and you are unable to react as you see yourself being countered. This leads me to believe that the game was centered more around an all out offensive than an actual rounded fighting experience.

One great addition (subtraction?) was giving up the two round format and instead giving each character a health bar that depletes twice. Almost like having a shield before your actual health bar. Why is this good? Well, I found it to be great because once you deplete your opponents 'shield' there is only a short pause before action starts again. This leaves less time in between action, and most importantly lets the player keep leftover health. There is no more annihilating an opponent in one round and having nothing to show for it moving forward. This makes it slightly less accessible for new players, and for that this can easily be considered a con as well.

DESTRUCTIBLE ENVIRONMENTS. Enough said.

A lot has been said about the story of this game. I'm not going to spoil anything (SHAZAM!), but I will say that if you're a fan of DC or just curious, it's definitely worth a play through. On normal, the difficulty is actually quite easy, so if you consider yourself a more advanced gamer, you should do yourself a service and up the difficulty.

Last thing I'm going to touch on is the multiplayer. When you buy a game like this, it's usually for the multiplayer, with few exceptions. The one here being, of course, fans of DC wanting to play as their favorite superhero/supervillain. The saving grace for the multiplayer here is that as I said before, the balance between characters is superb. Anyone that has played Mortal Kombat online knows that WAY too many people play Scorpion online. This is mostly because Scorpion is about the only character you can pick up and be halfway decent with relatively quickly. This game doesn't have that problem, at least in my experience, I've seen a good variety of characters online. Everything translates quite well in the multiplayer. Controls carry over, and I never felt cheated out of a victory like some fighting games can make you feel.

All in all, I have to say this was a pleasant experience. While flawed, Injustice: Gods Among Us offers a rich (while short) story for DC fans, and a heavily balanced fighting experience for 2D Fighting Game fans. My bottom line is, rent it if you are a DC fan, and if you are a competitive 2D Fighting Game fan, this can only offer you a change of pace, The real challenge still lies in Street Fighter IV and Mortal Kombat. Close, but not close enough. 8/10
