Homefront plays as a traditional first-person shooter, but with a heavy emphasis on "guerrilla warfare." Kaos wants it well known that the American resistance in Homefront is far from the Tier 1 operators headlining EA's Medal of Honor, or the tightly-knit Task Force from Activision's Modern Warfare; like protagonist Jacobs, the resistance is an amalgam of civilians-turned-soldiers -- inexperienced freedom fighters raised in arms against a common enemy. As such, Kaos wants players to feel actively hunted and persecuted against the constant GKR threat -- a concept expertly communicated through the game's initial mission.
What really sets Homefront apart from other run-of-the-mill first-person shooters was the game's war-torn suburban setting. You can walk into just about any GameStop and see a number of far-fetched futuristic sci-fi shooters, or ripped-from-the-headlines conflicts set out of the Middle East lining the shelves, but something about the still-inhabited, ruined Americana I saw really resonated with me. Here's hoping Homefront's setting, matched with its incredibly intriguing back story, will be enough to truly innovate and elevate the overall experience. -Gamepro
