Great premise, great potential, but sloppy controls prove to be the fatal flaw.

As a real pilot and sim-head, I still kept an open mind going into this game. I was hoping for either Secret Weapons over Normandy (SWON) with better controls, or a WW2 "Wing Commander". The missions are good, and the plane upgrade scheme is great, but I can't get past the controls.

I'm not expecting an IL-2 flight model, but the looseness of the controls compounded by the camera angles makes it too difficult for basic flight. I tried flying the "Professional" control scheme and found the roll way too imprecise and I couldn't even fly through waypoints without great trepidation. The arcade controls were slightly easier and more precise, but i still found low level flight and dogfighting to be subpar to SWON. Compound this with an aggregious stall model (the plane dropping like a stone without automatically dropping the nose to recover) along with the camera shift to above at stall (so you can't see where the nose is pointing), and a stall that is easily recovered within 100 feet by a pilot in training spells certain death from thousands of feet in this game. I would actually prefer the IL-2 flight model (or for that matter, the much maligned SWON model), and I'm certain I could get more kills as a result!

It is too bad, because this game had so much potential. I liked the professional setup with the left stick being the control stick and the right stick being the rudder/throttle combo. If the sloppy roll was tightened up and the stall not so awful, this could have been the best WW2 air shooter ever. As it stands now, this is a game I will regretfully take back because of its fatal flaw.
