Just go back to Dota

User Rating: 5 | Heroes of Newerth PC
I have first seen this game at an i-cafe and people were playing like crazy. I was soooo impressed, especially because I play Dota for about 3 years now. Yesterday I finally managed to get hold of a beta-key (not an easy thing at all, by the way) and gave it a go myself.

First the game had me hooked for about 5hrs easily, it seemed nice. Dota with improved visuals. But then I started to notice some quirks:
-repetitive char animations. You have only 4 skills and you will find yourself using 3 of them... allot. And the result is always the same. Don't know how icefrog did it, but I never got that feeling in Dota.
-it's annoying how they kept all the heroes and items from dota, but totally changed their name and appearance. Feels like a total rip off. I mean, show some originality! If you don't, give Icefrog some credit and DO NOT change every name you can find. Just pay him his dues, with 30 bucks per account, you can surely afford it.
-everything is so colorful. In fact, many times you can't distinguish heroes from the background and find yourself ganged.
-reduced difficulty: it's so easy to "last-hit" now. Money are pouring and the creeps will never manage to kill you, no matter what. Pretty much the same goes for the towers. Though they have more "meat" then those in Dota, they hit very weak.
-the struggle to make everything so shiny and bombastic leads to visual overkill sometimes. 1 second you are standing there, the next the entire screen shakes, boom, bang, green light, red light, flash, white light!. And you die still clicking in confusion. After it all clears you realize that was only "stone giant" and the "blacksmith" throwing 2 spells at you. You got the idea..

And now the really bad stuff:
-annoying characters voicing. Extremely repetitive, they have only 2 or 3 lines and keep spitting them every time you click.
-items are diminutive. There isn't a strategy when it came to that, any artifact will do. And now it's even easier because there is a "recommended" shop for EACH hero you can play. Just point there, as long as you have the gold you don't even have to read the item description, it's surrely to make you very strong. Also, the actual item slots are tiny and hidden at the bottom of the screen, as to pointing out there isn't much going on in there anyway.
-it is hard to inspect enemies now. Clicking on them doesn't select and bring the said hero on screen. Instead, it's stats appear displayed in gray, in a tiny tiny window in the right bottom corner. So that encourages you just to bash away, mindless as a zombie. It usually works too. Hero stats are equally hard to spot, placed in a tiny window, on the opposite side of screen -lower right. That makes it a pain to examine a hero before it dissapears again in the fog of war. Usually you can only make out the name.
-poor selection of heroes. Not even half the heroes you will find in Dota. Not to mention some heroes are not half as cool. Look up pudge. He's a woos now. he throws some kind of plunger and "You're mine now"??? please..... No "fresh meat" either.
-Few to no passive skills. Again a strategy killer, most skills require a point and click. Also ensures no "orb effects" override you passive, witch is a step to close to noob friendly for my liking.
-agility heroes are overpowered and int ones are nerfed badly. Almost all agility has some kind of slow or invisibility. Some are even worse with leap attack, slow, poison, armor reduction AND silence. (look up the new lanaya, "death maiden" I think?). Try to beat that 1v1 with an int hero!
-too many noobs! It's hard to play a game untill the end, there are always leavers and feeders. And it's easier then Dota, anyone good there can just jump in and own the house...
You may be wondering why I gave it a 5 then? because it took Dota many years to achieve the level of perfection it reached nowadays, many updates, many patches and a huge fanbase. This game is barely in it's beta phase, maybe in 8 years it will score a 10 in my handbook too. It would be unfair to harshly compare these 2 now. That, and the fact that it DID manage to get me hooked 2 days playing. A plus for addiction and coffee consumption there. Also the matchmaking systems works good, with no lag and online "leaver" recordings. That way you can restrict your game so that only people with less then a certain % leaves can join. No more private banlists, and admin abusers, yepee!
Thank you for taking the time to read this long review, but I felt compelled not let anything slip, I guess I'm bound to take allot of criticism for the low rating.
