The storyline works, the gameplay doesn't

User Rating: 7 | Gungrave OD PS2
Gungrave: Overdose is a sequel to the anime as well as the Playstation 2 game that the show is based off of. As with most anime spin-offs, Gungrave is not a good game for non-fans. However, if you like the show, you will stick with this game if only for the storyline and as a chance to be in control of Beyond the Grave.
Gameplay/Story: The story continues three years after the Millenion incident. The storyline almost requires you to know the show so I will give a short summary of the show here. If you don't want to have anything spoiled for you, I will mark the end of the spoilers. note that this takes place long before the game and almost none is explained for you. *SPOILERS* Brandon Heat is a thug who just wants some freedom with his friends. One day, however, his friends are killed in front of his eyes by a mafia member, only he and his friend Harry Macdowel survived the encounter and decided to join a mob group known as Millenion. After rising through the ranks, however, Harry decides that power is more important than friendship and betrays Brandon. Later, Harry uses a drug known as Seed to create an army of super soldiers that have completely lost their souls. Years later, a girl and a scientist decide to bring back Brandon in order to protect the girl who is the daughter of Brandon's lover. Brandon is resurrected without his memories or emotions as a super soldier known as Beyond the Grave. He takes his Cerberus guns and combats Seed and Harry Macdowel and eventually kills Harry and destroys the Seed production plant. Grave then goes back into his eternal rest.
*END SPOILERS*
The story starts up again as the girl resurrects Grave again because they need his help. Seed has been brought back and they need his help to shut it down again. You are immediately thrown in control of Grave and you must fight to stop Seed once again.
The gameplay is very exciting at first but soon becomes quite repetitive. You can do long range attacks with Square, close range with O, and a super powered attack with triangle. This leaves little room for combos as there is only one button for each kind of attack. The biggest kind of combo you can make is simply mashing a button as fast as possible. However, the attacks that you can do look amazing. For example, if you mash Square fast enough, long enough, he goes into a kind of crazed mode, where he shoots all around him. This looks cool but isn't very difficult to do. Also, the difficulty is very unbalanced. At the beginning, the game is incredibly easy, all the skill you need is to hold the lock on button and mash Square. However, about halfway through the game, the difficulty flies up and you have to be incredibly careful to stay alive. Unfortunately, this fight for survival doesn't seem to make the fighting any less repetitive.
One cool part of GG:O, is the addition of 2 other playable characters. You can now play as two new people, Juji, or RB, throughout their storylines. Unfortunately, the fighting system is almost identical for these characters and the storyline is almost the same too.
Graphics: The graphics are very poorly done and aside for the key main characters, most are hardly detailed and look very generic. The anime cutscenes, of which their are plenty, have horrible character models and look incredibly boring. This is unfortunate as the show has such a high level of detail.
Sound: The voiceovers are mostly god-awful. All the main characters are emotionless except for RB who does sound like the hip, playboy that he is supposed to be. Spike, a new character who plays the scientist role throughout the story, also sounds okay but not great.
Value: If you were a fan of the show, you will love the storyline and probably stick through the game and enjoy it. If you aren't a fan, then the storyline won't make much sense to you and the gameplay will become to repetitive to finish.
