Beyond the grave

Ever play an action game and say to yourself "Man, i hate these platform elements and the small bit of puzzles sprinkled between. " Well your simple prayers have been answered with an action game that's all about just that "action."

GunGrave OD you'll basically know if you'll like by the first level (or even less) where all the action takes place behind your character's back. Droves of enemies all come out to try and kill you. It's basically one of the most arcade inspired action games ever made for the consoles, meaning you're here just to whoop ass and if that ass is really fighting back you whoop it extra hard. Then again you'll know that well since before the start of each level it tells you to go Kick Their Ass.

Now it sounds fun and great, but basically you might grow tired of it quick. Nothing breaks up the action, go from one room to another and shoot (or slash) up the place. The use of two other characters besides Grave let you replay it again with different moves, but basically you'll most likely face the same problem as you had playing it the first time around.

The graphics themselves seem stuck somewhere between the PS1 and Dreamcast. Meaning it looks "passable" but you can tell the designers were all looking at ways for you to shoot things more then working up problems like that. One big problem is the distance in which you can see is limited, so you'll be wandering into a lot of black voids and at times youll see black silhouettes of enemies running at you, but nothing you can do about it until they're right infront of you.

Another problem is the whole environments and camera. Basically the levels feel very uninspired (once more, emphasis on shoot them up good) and the camera adds more to the problem. Since all the action takes place behind the back of your character (and only in that angle) youll get hit blindly alot and plenty. You'll also be stuck in boss battles since youll be stuck over small things (a plant pot for example) and not even know it. It tries to help you out by giving you a block command, but usually it's not responsive (press L3 and melee at the exact same time basically, so it wont come as much help).

Not to say this is a bad game, some people will get a kick out of it. Though basically just know what you're getting into when you're playing this game. It's all about action and if you're expecting something to break it up in between like so many other action games, don't press your luck.
