A less appealing entry in the otherwise great Guitar Hero franchise.

User Rating: 6.5 | Guitar Hero: Aerosmith WII
I'm a massive fan of Guitar Hero 3, having owned it own both the PS2 and the Wii. I'm also enjoying Guitar Hero: World Tour at the time of writing. I'm not a massive fan of Aerosmith, but I like enough of their songs to have made me consider their version of GH worth playing.

Unfortunately, while GH: Aerosmith isn't bad, it's not terribly exciting either. For me the enjoyability of a GH game, or any rhythm game really, is largely dependent on the tracklist. GH3's tracklist blew me away, World Tour's is almost as good, and the Rock Band titles have plenty of amazing songs too. GH: Aerosmith, however, offers a pretty bland selection.

I'm not complaining about the fact that it has so many Aerosmith tracks, as the game is named after them and aimed at their fans, I was just disappointed with the lack of non-Aerosmith tracks on offer. There are only a few, the only real highlights for me being The Kinks' 'All day and all of the Night' and Run DMC's 'Kings of Rock'. Most of the others are Joe Perry tracks, and he's an Aerosmith member anyway.

Even the Aerosmith songlist has some gleaming omissions. Where are 'Janie's Got a Gun' and 'Same Old Song and Dance'? Even the remake of the Beatles classic 'Come Together' would have been nice. Instead we are given a list that while does include several classics, such as 'Livin' on the Edge', 'Walk This Way' and 'Dream On', also gives us plenty of tracks which only their biggest fans would be familiar with, and which are, frankly, for the most part ordinary.

Sure, that's just my personal opinion as far as the music itself is concerned, but no one could deny that the majority of these old school Aerosmith tracks make for a lacklustre GH experience. For the first time ever, I found myself bored while playing a Guitar Hero game. The general pattern is play through 3 or 4 ordinary tracks to play one more exciting one, before another few boring ones.

As I said it's not bad, and if you are a huge Aerosmith fan or absolutely crave another GH experience, you'll get the most out of it. But if you're just another GH player like myself, expect a much weaker entry in the series.
