The first GTA sequel is more tame but also more enjoyable than the original.

The original Grand Theft Auto game was a moderate hit due to its free living world environment and its violent carnage combined with dark humor. The sequel tones down the gore and profanity substantially but it still manages to be a fun and effective sequel that improves many of the first games mechanics and fixes some of the issues as well.

Like in the original, the goal of the game in any of the three areas is to rack up enough money to complete the level (you are given a target score). However once you have obtained enough cash you can stay in the level as long as you like to complete more missions and make more money. There are three gangs in each of the areas and the most effective way of making money is by working for the gangs. During missions however you are likely to kill rival gang member thus reducing their respect for you. If a gangs respect meter drops below a certain point they will not offer you any work and shoot you on sight when you travel through their territory. Completing jobs and killing rival gang member will rise the respect meter for a given gang and as the respect meter raises so does access to more lucrative assignments. There are 7 missions per gang, per area plus a bonus mission at the end of each area making for 66 missions in total so the game has a nice value. You can choose to work for one gang exclusively or go from area to area killing gang members to work for all the gangs. In addition to all the missions you can also collect tokens hidden throughout the city and participate in the notorious kill frenzies, where you are given a weapon with unlimited ammunition, a time limit and a target score.

The graphics for this game are much improved from the original. There are some nice explosion effects and the lighting is fantastic. Another improvement over the first game is the assisted targeting with the machine gun and the addition of a health meter. This makes combat more fun and shootouts last longer than in the first game. Also for the mayhem enthusiasts; high powered weapons are more easily accessible and less sparse than in the first, making it so those who just want to blow up a bunch of stuff can pick up the game and play for a few minutes without a huge time investment

Some things that I didn't like about the game: the save system where you need to have first completed a mission, return to your hideout and then spend 50,000 dollars to save is ludicrous and inconvenient. There is no in game map so finding your way around can be an arduous task in memorization and outright getting lost. Many of the arrows leading you around can be misleading as well and you will often find yourself having to go around huge areas to get to a certain place just out of sight. The control is still pretty bad and takes some getting used to plus you can't really customize the control scheme to much aside from picking an option in the settings.

In conclusion GTA2 is a fantastic sequel that looks and controls better than the original there is no multiplayer in this Dreamcast version however, that I've heard exists only in the PC version but I doubt anyone still plays that aspect anymore anyway. I highly recommend this game if you enjoyed the original and to those who started with the PS2 versions to see how primitive things used to be.
