WTH? So simple yet so addictive...

User Rating: 8.5 | Grand Chase PC
Grand Chase gives a sort of almost nostalgic feel for the good old days of beat em up games such as Captain Commando or The Avengers. The premise is quite similar but apparently on steroids.

This game is quite simple. Characters have access to various moves and attacks performed with only one attack button. Holding the button charges up a special MP bar. When the button is released a powerful move is performed depending on how long the button was pressed and up to where it had charged up to since the bar has three levels. Now here is the important part: when performing skills time is stopped for a few seconds. This allows cunning players to charge up for example a level 1 attack and upon releasing it charge up for a level 2 or another level 1 attack. This also allows players to "freeze" the action and gain the upper hand.

Dungeon is the Story Mode of the game. It allows players to fight through platform like rooms against multiple enemies in a beat em up fashion. Each room is interconnected to other rooms forming a sort of branched paths. The goal of the player is to make it to the Boss room in one piece. Bosses are generally quite challenging but nothing that cannot be handled. The fun in Dungeons comes from having a full party of four friends/people all together kicking some major arse. Dungeons are also where players can stock up on much needed Gold as well as equipment from monster drops and materials for enhancements.

The game's real fun comes from the PvP rather then its Dungeons. In PvP players can play Team or Survival games. The Host, or creator of the room, can also turn on or off the Tag Match and Item Modes options for variety. By having Tag Match on all players must select two characters to fight with. During the match players can switch between their two selected characters as long as they are still alive. Items add a new depth to the action by adding "power ups" that randomly appear. Players can have various power ups stocked and use them at any time while they have them. However if they die any power ups they picked up drop down. Some power ups make the player invisible, while others slow down the opponents.

PvP is quite balanced but it requires skill. Every class has its own pros and cons. In the right hands every character has the potential to beat any other character regardless of the fact that some characters are geared to fight better against other characters. For example Elesis the Knight can better deal against Lire the archer. However a skilled Lire can beat an Elesis.

PvP can become fast, hectic and very addictive as the players learn how best to make use of their characters and their skills as well as how to perform different techniques such as skill grabs, chain skills, etc. Pets also add to the depth of combat as they can aid the player whenever their own special bar charges up.

All in all a great game that grows on you quite quickly. However PvP can be quite frustrating at times unless the person learns the advanced techniques such as Ottoing, V-Stepping, Grabbing, Air Grabbing, etc.
