Gone Home

The game “gone home” is a first-person interactive story adventure game, set in the year 1995. Kaitlin Greenbriar returns home after a year abroad, however not everything is as expected. The first thing she sees is a note from her sister, Samantha, which says that she should not go looking for answers as for where she is. The rest of her family has also gone missing. You enter the house and begin to search for clues to find out what has happened.

At first, the game reminded me of Amnesia: the dark descent, as it was a dark mansion and you had to look for clues. However, it became clear that it was not supposed to be scary which was disappointing. The graphics of the game was more than good enough, because it was the story of the game that mattered the most. After some frustrating hours of not knowing what to do, I figured that I should slow down the pace instead of trying to finish as fast as possible, this made the game much more enjoyable. Therefore, I think it is important to read about the game before you play it, so you know what to expect.

I really enjoyed exploring the house, because there were so many details, such as hidden rooms and items. In addition, it was interesting to find out more about the “not so important characters” like her mother and father. However, the main story could have been more interesting; I felt I knew how the story would unfold a bit too early in the game.

Is Gone Home a good game? Yes, the game tells us a story without spoon-feeding the information directly to you, and the 90’ setting of the game fills you with nostalgia. If you want an action-filled game with fancy gameplay this is not the game for you. However, if you don’t mind hours of exploring and searching, I think you will appreciate this game.
