User Rating: 9.6 | GoldenEye 007 N64
Like Doom, Goldeneye has changed the way FPS games were made creating a new wave of games based on its gameplay. As usual with all Nintendo highly anticipated games, Goldeneye was postponed more than once but the wait was worth. Forget about first person shooter on platforms like Saturn and PS, this is the best. The gameplay is probably its biggest addition to the FPS genre games, in goldeneye you are not supposed to just shoot at things and enemies but also to complete some cool objectives like finding an specific computer and installing a virus in it, finding the security room and disabling all security cameras inside the enemie base, in other words, everything 007 is used to do in his movies you do in this game. Of course there is action in the game which is packed with enemies requiring intense shooting and in most of situations you´ll have to use your brain to find the best tactic to escape. As in other games, weapons and ammo can be obtained from dead enemies and some weapons are much better in certain situations. Understanding the use of your equipment and the best tactic like avoiding some killing will be extremely important if you want to finish this game. Bond has all his gadgets from the movies in this game, a laser watch, cameras, key analysers and much more. The control configuration couldn´t be better for the N64 controller allowing Bond to strafe and shoot up/down with ease. The game has 18 levels that can be replayed in harder modes once you finish each of them. The multiplayer mode can be really fun with all the options of weapons, areas and characters but you may face some slowdowns. The game has nice realism touches like the headshoot which means instant kill while a shoot at the leg would just harm your enemie and not killing him. The AI is one of the stromgest points in the game forcing you to think about the best tactic to use before taking any action, enemies can be very smart and surprise you if underestimated. Graphics are just awesome with a ton of effects creating the perfect atmosphere for the game making use of fog, smoke from walls and guns, sparks from shooting and many other great details such as bullet holes on the walls. Pixel explosions like in Playstation and Saturn games cannot be seen in Goldeneye and the textures look beatiful especially when you get close to objects. The sound effects in Goldeneye are excellent, ricocheting bullets, footsteps and the shattering glass sound perfectly real. The soundtrack is based on the movie as expected. Goldeneye is brilliant in every aspect and it´s a must have for any N64 owner. This is another Rare´s masterpiece that will make you play non stop until the end of the game.
