Didn't like Monster Hunter? This might change your mind when it comes to hunting games

User Rating: 8.5 | God Eater Burst PSP
In Japan Monster Hunter is still one of the best-selling-games on the PSP since it was first released back in 2005, few years after being a best seller for the PSP, Namco Bandai steps into the ring with God Eater. It was released back in 2010 in Japan but when it was released outside of Japan it fixed most of its problems it had in the Japanese version, but later improved re-released as God Eater Burst which was released on UMD and on the Playstation Store.

Story takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting, with the events of the game happening in Japan in 2071. Most of the world has been razed by the Aragami, mysterious and aggressive alien creatures that appeared one day. They consist of colonies of hundreds of thousands of independent units, which are analogized as cells. As such, they are called oracle cells. The only way to hurt or kill an Aragami is by using a God Arc, a specialized biological weapon that itself is made of oracle cells. Which is basically a group of hunters which are just normal people have skills and powers to taking down these monsters.

Gameplay: Like Monster Hunter you'll be going on missions on taking down certain type of monsters in various locations in the God Eater world. You can create and customise your own character which you play as and of course in most basic story-plots you are the main protagonist that has a certain power that no one else has. Using the left analog stick to move, L button to lock-on to enemies and the R button to dash and switch from sword to gun.

When using your gun it pretty much feels like a third-person shooter where you can use various types of ammo from standard bullets to healing bullets. Not only that you would also have to use the directional pad to look around and finding a good aim to fire. If you switch to sword you can move around quicker, using Square for light attacks and Triangle to use fierce attacks but if you hold down Triangle your sword can eat a huge chunk of enemy's health and that turns into a Link Burst. Link Burst are turned into combo burst which can do some major damage either using sword or gun attacks.

Instead of fighting enemies by yourself you'll have 3 other players helping you out on your missions this actually helps you easily take down enemies instead of doing everything all by yourself, but if you die someone will try and wake you up. But if your team and you are defeated means you've failed the mission.

Graphics and Sound: It does have some great visuals and stunning environments set in ruined cities, underground subways and abandoned power stations. I do love the Sci-Fi Steampunk elements for its characters and story-plot as you progress through its story. Loading times might takes their time but isn't that much of a problem, the biggest problem with most PSP games is the camera system which can get out of hand but like most JRPG games this shouldn't bother you if you're a fan of these type of games.

There is no option to change the voicing to Japanese but its English voice isn't that bad you could say it isn't that bad to listen to they've got the right voices for some of the various characters you'll come across. Soundtracks does a great touch too including an Anime Opening theme which will be at the very start of the game before starting a new game or loading game.

This is compatible on the PS Vita if you own one. To do this, the user must first download the game to the PS3. From there, go to Content Transfer on the PS Vita and select the game for transfer. Once complete, the game will show up on the Vita's menu. But if you don't own one you can still download it from the PS Store or purchase the UMD version.

Overall: This was one of the last good line-up of games for the PSP but it's still worth checking out. You can play up to 2-4 players if they have a copy of the game. If you own a PS3 you can play this through the Ad-Havoc Party by connecting your PSP to your PS3 with a USB cable and from there you can play with other players online. There's more than a 100 missions to play through including DLC which you can download for free through the PS Store and also customise your own Avatar Card. If you weren't a fan of Monster Hunter, God Eater might be your kind of game and feels a little easier to play on its controls and difficulty.
