Incredible. Probably Game of the Year.

User Rating: 9 | God of War PS4

This game is a masterpiece and is probably going to be the game of the year. I can't quite give it a perfect 10 though, but my rating is more like a 9.5 and I shall tell you why.

At first, I wasn't overly impressed. As a big fan of the original God of War series, I quickly realized that the gameplay was completely different. Firstly, there were no Blades of Chaos. You just have an Axe, and he swings the axe quite slowly. From the extremely fast paced combat that I experienced with the Blades of Chaos, this was a change and was much slower, which I didn't enjoy as much. However, the axe grows on you too and eventually, you get another weapon that's much faster, and trust me, it was an epic moment and well worth the wait!

Also, the controls were weird. I have never played a game in which the main attack button was R1. You also aim using L2 and block using L1 and you have no idea how many times I mixed those two up. So when you want to throw your axe, you use L2 + R1 to aim and throw and then immediately Triangle to recall the axe. This just felt like a weird combo. You do this combo often in the game so it was quite challenging getting used to it. There's also R2 for heavy attacks, but that attack is even slower, so I never liked using it. However, despite all this, you do get used to the controls as you keep playing, so they weren't a problem.

These were the only reasons I couldn't give it a 10, but now for the positives.

Like I said, I wasn't overly impressed at first, but this game grows on you SO MUCH as you keep progressing. It just gets better and better and you never want it to end. And it was very long too, longer than I expected.

No non-stop fighting with hundreds of enemies like in the original God of War series. This was a good thing. There were cutscenes, climbing, puzzles, etc. just as much as combat. It's also a much more mature storytelling than the original series. Kratos is a changed man. A man of few words, but sensible, rational and now a father. A lot of emotions between him and his son, whose character really develops as the story progresses.

Just buy this game. You don't want any spoilers. Buy it and you won't regret it. It's a game that you can say for certain that you will play again...and again. Worth every penny.
