A game scary enough to scare a ghost

User Rating: 1 | Ghostbusters NES
I think we can all agree on one thing, not all movies can make great games, but we can also agree there should be no excuse as to some movie based games shouldn't suck, take for example the popular movie franchise turned into a game, Ghostbusters on the NES, a game that takes all the action of the hit movie into an awesome game, or so they tell us. What they really mean is that it takes all the frustration every gamer will feel playing this game into a really bad game.

PLOT: The game stays sort of true to the movie, but there are not enough scenes from the movie that makes its a faithful adaptation and I will get to that soon. 4/10

GRAPHICS: Oh dear lord, for a moment there I thought I went colorblind, why is 98% of the game's colors gray? The ghosts all look the same, the Ghostbusters look like plumbers, and the cars look like boxes. 1/10

SOUND: It's nice to hear the Ghostbusters theme play, but not throughout the game, it's the only song in the game, there a few sound effects, and then there is the infamous Ghostbusters shout heard at the beginning. 0.5/10

CONTROLS: They aren't too bad until you get to the last part of the game where you have to tap the A button repeatedly. 2/10

GAMEPLAY: Here is the shortest summary on how this game works: buy equipment, drive to buildings, catch ghosts, enter Zuul building, die on staircase, try again, and repeat. There is no fun factor in this game, all you do is catch the same generic ghosts, get money, and try to beat the staircase. Now some of these things you have to do in the game don't make sense, why do you have to buy your equipment to catch ghosts and get gas? That shouldn't have been a pat of the game at all, there was no need for it because you need a lot of money to actually open up the last level, yes you need a certain amount of money to open up the last level of the game, but with constantly buying gas, running into cars on the driving sections, and buying equipment, it will take you a long time to actually get in the building. if you reach the staircase you actually have to tap the A button repeatedly or get a turbo button, now there are ghosts that plague you all through the level, it takes only 3 hits for you to die, and once you die, you guessed it game over and back to the beginning of the game to do it all over again. The only way to beat it is with Game Genie, now the final area is an overhead level where you shoot at Gozer, making this the highlight of the game, and with sheer preservation, you get the infamous CONGLATURAION! screen. 0/10

CONCLUSION: This game had so much potential, good action scenes, good story, and good suspensful moments, and what happened? It got screwed up. There was no excuse as to how bad it is, it seems the developers just saw the trailer for the film and put it into their minds as to how the movie would turn out. If you are looking for a good Ghostbusters game, get the one on the Genesis or Xbox 360, those were games that were actually cared for and put into a lot of thought on how to do a Ghostbusters game justice, which is more than can be said for this game.
