Great side-scroller with a comedic slant...

User Rating: 8.9 | Gex PS
Well, before Gex wnt into a 3D adventure world and ruined the series for the rest of its time, it was a quirky side-scrolling platformer filled with one-liners and decent challenges. Not many people may remeber Gex or some may even want to forget him after his 2nd game was made, but back in the time of his first game, he was absolutely magnificent.

You play as Gex, a lazy coch potato gecko that suddenly gets sucked into his TV, literally, by the evil Rez. To find his way out of the media dimension, Gex must defeat Rez and anyone else that gets in his way.

The graphics for this game are great for its time. It's a blend of both a 2D-like background, but a 3D character. The character models are designed quite well and are never blocky or oddly shaped for a PSX title. Other than that, the graphics aren't much of a subject for this game.

The game plays like any other side-scrolling platformer. there's a jump button, a button to attack, blah, blah, blah. It's nothing I've never seen, but the controls are solid and easy nonetheless. There's good respone to them and the commands are laid out nicely for the little pice of plastic beteen your hands.

All in all, Gex really isn't as innovative as it is fun. The game does everything right for a platformer and makes it a joy to play. If you can still find this game somewhere, do yourself a little favor and go pick this one up, it'll satisfy that platformer itch.
