NOT What I was Hoping For

User Rating: 2.9 | Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows XBOX
Remember the good old days when the Sega Dreamcast was new and everyone had an N64? Back in that time I couldn't get enough of Gauntlet Legends. I got a character up to lvl 99 and I was till hooked. Me and my friends would play that for hours. When I found out that Xbox had a Gauntlet sequel I immediately became excited, was I going to find a game that finally has some simple addictive gameplay?

The answer was no. From start to finish I couldn't believe how terrible the game was. From the beginning, not even the monster spawn huts are different, all monsters come from the same thing, unlike GL. The graphics were better but that has to be expected on an Xbox (as far as Xbox graphics go though it is mediocre at best). I was glad to see that after leveling up you could pick what stats to upgrade and even better, there were now combos and even special attacks that took up mana. I was extremely dissappointed to see though that special attacks were the only things availible for purchase in the aftergame screen. But I figured that the improvements outweighed the problems. Again, I was proven incorrect. By the third level (about 20 minutes into the game) the fun had stopped and I was playing solely with the intention of beating the game as it had become terribly repetative. The problem with this though was that the gameplay was an improvement upon the N64/DC versions. Just goes to show you how advanced games have become. Anway, by level 4 I had excess gold (already bought all the moves) and also found out that you don't gain a level by defeating death (like in the original), at this point playing to "level my character" was out the window as the user would have to do it the long, hard, old fashioned way. About 2 hours later I beat the game, I was extremely disappointed (again) on how the final boss was handled, not once do you get to attack him, you just activate ballistas on the ground to shoot at him making him The easiest boss in the game (no joke). Multiplayer though is definitley more fun than the single player, the problem is 2x0 still equals 0. I was actually able to find 1 game online and played for an hour or two, teaming up on the monsters was kinda fun, I used the wizard to pull all the monsters together while the warrior racked up huge combos on the enemies (on hard). But I have never seen another game since and thus the game has been collecting dust for several months now. I thought about trading the game in for some credit to buy a better game but realized that I can get nothing out of the credit received for this game (it is either not accepted or I get like a dollar, yippee).

Overall:
Worse than Gauntlet Legends, multiplayer would've been kinda fun for a few days if someone besides me was actually playing that game. If you are a fan of the series, stick with Legends (though that is boring by today's standards).

Rent if you have nother better to play, do NOT buy. Not fun even for fans.
