From the rise of the new consoles to the continued strength of the PC, 2014 truly had something for every type of game fan. Our Game of the Year Awards aim recognise what we think are the most outstanding games for 2014, and reflect the opinion of GameSpot's entire editorial staff (as opposed to any single opinion).

We've chosen five of the best as nominees for each of our platform categories. Any original game released between December 2013 and the end of November 2014 were eligible, as were all of our selections for our Game of the Month program. You'll also notice a new category this year: Best Reissue, which was introduced to recognise some of the outstanding reissues and remasters released in 2014.

Stay with us over the next two weeks as we unveil category winners every day. And be sure to come back on December 18, when we reveal our pick for overall Game of the Year.
