By Matt Espineli on November 9, 2015 at 5:00AM PST

    Local Uncharted Territory

    Local Uncharted Territory

Fallout 4's Boston Wasteland is packed with all sorts of areas and items to discover. With so much to find in just the first few hours, we thought we'd compile the best places for you to go to make the most of the game's starting locations. But be wary that everything you find in the game is randomized, so your looting may vary somewhat compared to others. Regardless, check out what we found!

The Cryolaytor (You Can't Have it Now)

The Cryolaytor (You Can't Have it Now)

In Vault 111's overseer chamber, you can find the Cryolaytor, a powerful weapon that sprays a frosty mist that can freeze enemies in place. Unfortunately, it's found in a case with a Master level lock, which means you can't get it until you've unlocked the associated Locksmith perk rank at level 18.

    Out of the Vault

    Out of the Vault

When you first emerge from Vault 111, make sure to take advantage of the area's nearby items and resources. In the shack beside the Vault platform, you can find a First-Aid box. Additionally, a few loose cargo boxes to the north contain more stuff to find.

Loot Sanctuary (If You Haven't Already)

Loot Sanctuary (If You Haven't Already)

Down the hill from the Vault is your old neighborhood Sanctuary Hills. However, it has seen some rough days in the 200 years you've been gone. Regardless, it's now filled with all sorts of vital supplies to find. Be sure to check all containers, chests, and first-aid boxes for whatever you can get.

    Notable Mentions:

    • While searching through each of the houses, make sure to keep an eye out for any bobby pins. These are a necessity towards picking locked doors or safes containing useful supplies and items.
    • If you haven't already, grab the Grognak the Barbarian comic on the kitchen counter of your house. It'll give you a permanent +5% damage to unarmed and melee attacks. It's also worth noting that any comics you find will give you permanent stat boosts.
    • One of the houses to the northeast, near the neighborhood's cul-de-sac, will have a novice lock safe in it with the possibility of ammo and medical supplies.
    • You'll come across a house with a computer in it. Here you can find a Med-X and a novice lock safe filled with supplies.
    • A trash can near the bridge holds two frag grenades, which are hard to come by during your early moments in the Wasteland.
    A Shack to the North

    A Shack to the North

Directly north of Sanctuary at the very top edge of the map, you can find a little shack guarded by a raider and his attack dog. Fight them off and be sure to grab the raider's twin barrel shotgun. The duo's shack is filled with items and supplies that you can scavenge for yourself.

    Target Practice

    Target Practice

If you reach the edge of the map going north of Sanctuary and keep hugging the edge while going eastward, you can find a scavenger engaging in target practice on Nuka Cola bottles. Beside him is a toolbox and a dresser filled with items. If you head in the direction of the red box in the image above, you can find more stuff in a bathtub and a toolbox.

    Secluded Tool Shed

    Secluded Tool Shed

To the west of Sanctuary near the edge of the map, there's a tool shed with a novice grade lock. If you can successfully pick it, you can find a couple of containers to loot.

    Robotic Disposal Ground

    Robotic Disposal Ground

If you wander northeast of Sanctuary, you can find the Robotic Disposal Ground. When you get there, make sure to enter its main shack to find a lot of useful items, like a Stimpak, a RadAway, two military grade circuit boards, purified water, duct tape, turpentine, and a Hot Rodder magazine that unlocks a permanent new custom paint job for Power Armor. A weapons workbench can be found here as well.

Before leaving, be sure to scrounge the area's junkyard, as you can find a fusion core and another military grade circuit board inside a box marked with a star sitting next to a deactivated Sentry Bot. It's important to note that a fusion core is a special item used to operate Power Armor suits.

    Sentry Bot Escort

    Sentry Bot Escort

At the Robotic Disposal Ground mentioned in the previous slide, you can find a computer in the main shack that activates a powerful Sentry Bot sitting outside. Once activated, you can engage its defensive protocol, which orders it to a specific location so it can protect the area from enemies. But since the Sentry Bot needs to travel there directly, you can actually follow it, allowing you to be defended from any dangerous enemies it encounters along the way. Be advised though, most of the locations it can go to demand you to be at a higher level, so don't be surprised if you accidentally catch an enemy's attention and get one-shotted.

    Defense Protocol Locations include:

    • South Boston Checkpoint
    • Revere Satellite Array
    • Fort Hasan
    • USAF Satellite Station Olivia
    A Shelter Tucked Away

    A Shelter Tucked Away

There's a small shelter tucked away at top of a hill just east of the Robotic Disposal Ground. Here you can find an ammo box and other supplies on a table. There's also a chem kit with more supplies beside the mattress.

    Power Suit in the Wreckage

    Power Suit in the Wreckage

If you travel further east of the Robotic Disposal Ground, you can find the leftover wreckage of an aircraft with cargo boxes strewn about. But more importantly, there's an abandoned Power Armor that you can activate, granted you have a Fusion Core. It's worth noting that it's still possible to get in the Power Armor without a Fusion core; but your movement speed will be encumbered.

    Discarded Bodies

    Discarded Bodies

Near the wreckage from the previous slide, there's a bathtub and steel drum barrel containing dead bodies. Be sure to loot them as they're bound to have some good items. You can also find a novice lock wooden crate beside the tub, which will also have some useful supplies.

    A Generator of Stuff

    A Generator of Stuff

If you go south of Sanctuary, you can cross a bridge over a creek heading towards the Red Rocket Gas Station. But when you do, turn left and hug the the creek's shoreline until you encounter a trash can containing a RadAway. From here, keep hugging the shoreline until you encounter a generator with an attached cable leading up an adjacent hill.

Follow the generator's cable until you reach its other end. Hidden under its lid are three stashes of bottle caps. Beside the generator, you can also find additional supplies and items. More items can be found in a box on top of the structure next the generator.

    Abernathy Farm

    Abernathy Farm

Southwest of Concord lies the Abernathy Farm, where you can trade items and use various crafting workstations. You can also find a sidequest from the head of the family that lives here, Blake Abernathy. He wants you to eliminate a pack of raiders who reside at USAF Satellite Station Olivia and retrieve a lost locket that belonged to his deceased daughter. Completing this quest will grant you Workshop access at the farm and approximately 100 bottle caps.

It's worth noting that slightly northwest of the Abernathy farm is a lonely trailer containing a first-aid box, a chem kit, and an ammo box.

    Wicked Shipping Fleet

    Wicked Shipping Fleet

Located further southwest of Concord is the Wicked Shipping Fleet, an area that might look peaceful from a distance, but is actually filled with feral ghouls. If you're proficient at hacking, you can activate a Protectron using a nearby terminal to help you in your fight. Once you've taken care of the threat, you can find an assortment of weapons, supplies, and items scattered in its semi-truck trailers, first-aid boxes, and tool boxes.

    Notable Mentions:

    • In the red semi-truck trailer near a shed outside, you can find a dead body and a safe with a novice grade lock, each containing an abundance of supplies to scrounge.
    • In a shed beside the red semi-truck trailer, you'll find a special holotape with a recording on the desk computer.
    House of Loot

    House of Loot

While in Concord, track down the first explorable house to the east of Freedom Hall. There's a bunch of decent loot here, especially on the second floor where you can find a dead raider and a novice locked safe on the second floor.

    Concord Speakeasy

    Concord Speakeasy

From the front doors of Freedom Hall, head north and to your right you can find the Concord Speakeasy. Upon entering, there's an advanced lock safe under the front counter and a suitcase of loot. On the second floor, you can discover a couple machete wielding mannequins huddled over a bathtub. The Speakeasy's basement also has some useful items and supplies.

    Concord Civic Access

    Concord Civic Access

If you jump down the hole where the Deathclaw crawled out of during Concord's Minutemen mission, you can find a pathway leading to a small underground dungeon. Here you can find some useful weapons, items, and supplies to grab.

    Notable Mentions:

    • When you first enter the area, head straight until you find a door with chains you can remove. Go through it and walk down the hall until you encounter a door leading to another room. Located here is a first-aid box and a novice lock tool box.
    • Upon reaching the sewer area, keep walking down until you find a live Mirelurk to kill. From here, turn left to find an opening that leads into a room with a cart and a chest. Both are filled with useful items, supplies, and equipment to gather.
