The Suicide Squad Trailer Breakdown

Who says second chances don't exist? The 2016 Suicide Squad movie was an infamous disaster, but James Gunn, creator of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy movies, is in the driver's seat now, and the first trailer for his version, The Suicide Squad, is finally here.

Are the two movies related? Well, they share some characters, including Viola Davis's Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag, Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, and Jai Courtney's Captain Boomerang. But this is also clearly a reimagining of the concept, if this raucous trailer is anything to go by.

Either way, there's a lot to unpack here, from our first glimpses at many of the characters to hints at what's going on in the plot--and just what the hell is going on with that giant starfish. Read on for our takes on everything you might have missed in the trailer.

We open in media res with Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Thinker, King Shark, and Polka-Dot Man on a mission to rescue Harley from--somewhere or something. It turns out she doesn't actually need rescuing. Also, Polka-Dot Man is wearing a weird and very non-polka-dot costume, which might be worth some theories.

Just in case you forgot, Viola Davis is returning to play Amanda Waller, the "leader" of the Suicide Squad, in the sense that she's the one with her finger on the trigger of the bombs in their necks.

It's difficult to place exactly when the Harley rescue mission takes place in terms of the plot--Harley's in a ballgown (which we see later in the trailer) and most everyone seems at least a bit familiar with Harley when the plan is being discussed, but she and Bloodsport have apparently never met.

Sean Gunn is playing the anthropomorphic Weasel in the movie--here he is licking a cell window, a moment that was featured in the behind the scenes featurette from DC's FanDome last year.

Michael Rooker's Savant is the unlucky example used to show the Suicide Squad's brain-bomb implantation. He doesn't seem thrilled about it. We get it.

Jai Courtney is returning to play Captain Boomerang, last seen in the original Suicide Squad movie.

Another shot from the FanDome featurette in higher quality--here we see a line-up walking majestically in front of an American flag. From left to right we have Weasel, Blackguard (Pete Davidson), Mongal (Mayling Ng), Javelin (Flula Borg), Captain Boomerang, T.D.K. (Nathan Fillion), Savant, and Rick Flag.

Who doesn't love Mr. Pibb? Here's T.D.K. drinking one for--some reason? T.D.K. is an original character for the movie so we can't offer any real insight into him with comics trivia, but apparently he enjoys soda.

King Shark (voiced by Sylvester Stalone) has a handful of scene stealing moments in the trailer, the first of which features him being--you guessed it--a shark and eating a man. Why not.?

King Shark is also adorable Just look at that face and that big ol' shark hand.

Alice Braga plays Sol Soria, who is seen here having the appropriately charmed response to King Shark being cute.

Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian) is in the background of several shots but has very little dialogue. When he does speak, however, he makes an impression. Here he is deadpanning that he really does hope they die, which is both creepy and relatable.

Thinker (Peter Capaldi) is apparently a newcomer to the Suicide Squad's methodology because here he is getting a full run down of just what his job is by Bloodsport, Flag, and Harley (who tries her best but doesn't really deliver the correct message). In the comics, and likely in the movie based on his gross, augmented skull, Thinker is a powerful telepath and mind controller.

Bloodsport is apparently the leader of this Squad incarnation, according to Peacemaker that is. Where does that leave Flag? This moment--even though it absolutely revolves around a dick joke--also gives us a closer look at Cena's Peacemaker, a man who would proudly go to any length for "liberty."

Here's Polka-Dot Man again, this time in that costume he was wearing at the start of the trailer, having some sort of dance party--we're guessing this is related to Harley's red dress costume, but it's hard to tell.

Bloodsport, in an orange prison jumpsuit, makes an attempt on Waller's life here. Maybe this is a moment from his recruitment offer?

Eating people isn't King Shark's only option when it comes to combat. He can also straight up tear dudes in half.

Another scene from the FanDome featurette--Harley, in her dress, having a massive shoot-out. based on the trailer's intro, this is likely the moment before Flag and Bloodsport's unnecessary rescue mission.

It's difficult to tell exactly what some team member's relationships to one another actually are, but we do get a quick glimpse of a pretty cute moment between Bloodsport and Sol Soria where they mutually assure one another that they'll get out alive. They also seem to be wearing civilian clothes, so maybe the mission requires some undercover maneuvers.

The trailer's biggest reveal is none other than Starro the Conqueror, one of DC's oldest and goofiest super villains. Starro is a giant mind controlling starfish from space who can use tiny clones of himself that attach to victim's faces and brainwash them. We only see giant Starro here in the trailer, but chances are there will be a bunch of little Starros in the mix as well. It would make sense of Starro to be the reason the Squad was called in in the first place--though what a bunch of criminals are going to do to combat an intergalactic parasite is anyone's guess.
