The 25 Best PS4 Games Of All Time

From God of War to Persona 5 Royal, the PS4’s library is chock-full of incredible games.

Though Sony’s PlayStation 5 has been available for a few months, the PS4 will likely still be supported for a couple of years. This includes games made by Sony itself, some of which will release as cross-gen titles. And since the vast majority of PS4 games are backwards compatible on PS5--some of which even have next-gen updates--the PS4 is still alive and well. The PS5 library is still really small, so even if you have the new system, you still have plenty of time to check out PS4 games you didn't get to play when they launched. There is no shortage of PS4 games to choose from, and cutting it down to pick the very greatest was no easy task. To celebrate this past console generation, we’ve rounded up the 25 best PS4 games of all time. Note that there’s no ranking within this list; the games are presented in alphabetical order.

From stellar exclusives like God of War and The Last of Us Part II to brilliant indies such as Celeste and Undertale, our list focuses on the PS4 games that we will remember for years to come. If you own a PS5 and are specifically interested in PS5 exclusives or games that have received next-gen enhancements, we have a separate guide on the best PS5 games for 2021. Looking for more recommendations? Check out our picks for the best Nintendo Switch games and the best Xbox One games as well as the best Xbox Series X games.

Editor's note: This story was originally published in March 2020 and has been completely refreshed as of February 5, 2021. Previously, we included dozens of PS4 games that scored an 8 or higher from GameSpot; now, we've curated our picks to highlight only 25 of the best PS4 games of all time.

There is no way Last of Us 2 belongs on any list of good games.

It completely invalidated The Last of Us. If you don't know that, you didn't pay attention to the game. Joel and Ellie are the bad guys. Abby is the good guy. Joel murdered Abby's father and doomed the world to many more years of monsters and death. Abby grew throughout the game, found and saved a kid, then risked her life for him. She forgave Ellie and spared her life several times. Abby was the HERO. Ellie did not grow. She clung to her hatred and need for revenge for the justified killing of the evil Joel. Ellie was the villain as she caused the deaths of so many more survivors in her unjustified campaign of murder.

I really enjoyed the first game, but Last of Us 2 so violently cancelled the first game that I really ended up hating every minute of it.

@deaconmon: "There is no way Last of Us 2 belongs on any list of good games"

GOTY...

"It completely invalidated The Last of Us."

Wrong...

"If you don't know that, you didn't pay attention to the game."

100% certain I paid ten times more attention than you...

"Abby was the HERO."

See... Anyone paying attention, not only to this game but also to TLOU1 knows that in TLOU world there are no heroes...

"Ellie was the villain as she caused the deaths of so many more survivors in her unjustified campaign of murder."

And yet... She only kills two people without the shield of self defence... You clearly didn't paid attention...

@deaconmon: Oh really? I always thought that "Joel murdered Abby's father and doomed the world to many more years of monsters and death" in pt.1.

TLOU pt. 1 is all about this one decision - sacrificing the whole world just so that one little girl could leave. The decision itself and what has led to it. You really think that Joel did this just because he was evil or smth like that? In pt. 2 Abby killed a whole bunch of someone's fathers, mothers, brothers, etc. just so that one kid could live. But she was the HERO, right?

There are no good or bad characters here, no heroes, no villains. That's the whole point. Pt. 1 is all about love and sacrifice. Pt. 2 is about sacrifice and vengeance. It's about Abby losing everything in her life to vengeance and finally finding something (someone) to live for. And it's about Ellie going the same way but backward.

Free advice: go and google for gray morality and then ask yourself - maybe it's you the one who really didn't pay attention to the game?

@deaconmon: I agree to a point. I see their vision. An act I, II, III - of foundation, innocence lost, then redemption. The Last of Us 2 is like the 2nd act of so many apocalyptic movies or stories. You see the loss of innocent, and experience the downfall of civilization, the evil of human nature we all have in us to some degree, then the spiraling of the protagonist of "you have to become one with it', and then finally the 3rd act of self reflection, growth, and finally ... redemption.

I feel that the LOU2, is nothing more then the setup for the 3rd game of ::jazz hands:: great redemption and salvation. A story that has been told time and again.

But I agree with you in your comment, playing a game like the LOU2 is very different then LOU as the first game contained a proper act 1-3, while 2 is -i feel- nothing more then a setup for the 3rd and finale game. A game focused on the 2nd act is unfulfilling as character growth only spirals down, leaving the gamer with no sense of fulfillment. This is the equivalent of the movie The Road. Great concept art, but not very entertaining.

I still facepalm whenever I see God of War's son. Kratos looks like such a badass, and his son looks like a goofy CGI cartoon character out of a Disney Pixar movie.

For MY tastes I would have included REMNANT: From The Ashes and left off something like Celeste or Undertale. Remnant was such a perfect blend of so many different gaming elements I love, all wrapped up in a cool sci-fi setting. I can't recommend that game enough!

Hmmm, I only like a few of the games such as Spiderman, GOW, Uncharted, Titanfall 1-2 & Nier Automata. I would also add the EDF series to it as well. COD, Battlefield, Star Wars Battlefront 1-2, Destiny, Killing Floor 2, Anthem & Avengers (less some fixes/revisions), & Terminator Resistance.

Whilst preference is going to make almost everyone's top 25 list different there are two glaring omissions for me:

Ghost of Tsushima

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (It may well be approaching 6 years old but it is still one of the best action RPG's out there today.)

I think one of the biggest things- (missing from the list above) -is that Sony did by far was all of the JRPGs RPGs that they showcased and brought over to the console, many of which were exclusives. So many of tales of series, atlus, atlier, srpgs, indie, graphic novel, and just way too many to list.

I know some will balk and say, 'I do not like RPGs', hey that is fine. But it is a very strong genre that consistently gets funded and has the sales numbers large enough to get that next game made. I mean I love XBOX but the huge lack of exclusives as well as the shear lack of a variety of games in their library was insane. Much of this blame lays squarely on Don Mattrick's shoulder for killing off so many first party studio projects. (his vision was nothing but motion controlled and social media games).

@jenovaschilld: Couldn't agree more. What's ironic is that the 360 did so well because they had so many fantastic rpgs and jrpgs on the system. Then, when the Xbone got released they completely dropped the ball and were pretty much 'meh" when it came to doing it again. Sad. I would LOVE to see a NEW Lost Odyssey, Last Remnant, Blue Dragon, Resonance of Fate or even a new MagnaCarta 3! Man, those were great games with great gameplay and they boosted the $hit out of the 360s numbers. I know one of the reason the 360 had so many is because the original Xbox did squat in Asian countries because it had a complete lack of support for their type of games. You think Xbox would learn their lesson but they keep having to learn, over, the hard way. Again.

@naomha1: Amazing list of games there, like taking a walk down memory lane. Yeah the original xbox was also not afraid of jrpgs or of crpgs or rpg in general. With titles like Jade, KOTOR, Silver, and and many rpgs they could find. More importantly it was diverse. I mean there is nothing wrong with halo, gears, crackdown, dead or alive, army of two, and list another dozen fps and bro games with much less budgets and rocket launchers that shoot sharks..... meh.

The 360 put in the effort and money loss to gain footing in Asia but more importantly outside of America. Gamers do not live in the USA and Japan only- the huge prizes now are the EU, Brit, Africa, AU, well the whole world. And Sony and NIN really put in the work and effort, with shelf space, and a Mario / PS plastered just about everywhere for impulse buys.

What Balmer ceo of MS at the time, and Don Mattrick did was kill off all first party studios, focused the xbox into a living room, social media machine, motion controlled, and then killed off any chance of the console to pivot from their plans. The really believed that consoles would be dead, and only social media/ mobile would be left.

I mean the xbox - looks really good now. MS has bought up so many properties and studios it is crazy, they should have some really good 1 rst party exclusives with a wider variety. I do not think the dependence on nothing but cloud gaming/ xpass will pay off this gen, maybe 10th gen. But the ground work has to be laid.

I am hoping for a 'red wedding' console war this 9th gen, like the 4th and 6th.

@jenovaschilld: I know MS has gobbled up a few studios, and with Bethesda in the works that will be a huge boon towards their goal of first party games. Thing is, with the Bethesda sale, I don't think Bethesda will be down with ONLY having their games on MS consoles unless it is timed or MS throws a bunch of money at them to keep them quiet. Machine Gun Games, for example, released all their sales numbers after the first 2, new and rebooted, Wolfenstein games came out and besides PC, most of their sales were heavily geared towards PS. Now, I know Bethesda isn't exactly a JRPG studio but their rpgs do sell world-wide fairly well. Be interesting to see how this all plays out over the next 6-9 months with the buy.

Also, you have to figure that after Ballmer left, MS still did NOT recoup their loss in the market due to an absolute refusal to have 1st party studios make great games. Ballmer left in 2014. That was almost 7 years ago now. Now, I know MS has dropped the ball repeatedly trying to get the Xbox to where it needed to be and making a ton of mistakes along the way and they STILL don't have great 1st party support or games. Think about this. Halo 5 came out in 2015. The MCC came out in 2014. Those were the LAST great 1st party games Xbone had. Gears 5 was meh but came out on PC. So did the MCC. They also had Forza and Sunset Overdrive. Forza, while a great game, is NOT a system carrier and SO was, well, fun, but no one went and bought an Xbox One to play it. If you check any webpage for the exclusives coming out for the Xbox X it makes you wanna cry as a gamer. There's literally NOTHING that screams "BUY AN XBOX X!". Nada. Well, Halo Infinite might but well see if that even happens this year. I keep hearing sites say it'll probably be released on the 20th anniversary of Halo (November 7 I think) but 343 hasn't said anything.

After all that, Xbox is still NOT supporting new rpgs or jrpgs that won't be on another system . We're getting the Mass Effect redux but so is PC and it won't be on the Xbox X as an exclusive, just playable on it. The new Tales game is coming out for all systems. If you look here-https://www.rpgsite.net/feature/10026-the-rpgs-of-2021-every-rpg-and-their-release-dates-you'll notice a glaring lack of anything resembling an Xbox X exclusive. While FPS dominate the market, and games like PUBG or Fornite or any of the copycats, RPGs are still system sellers and sell a TON of copies. Shame Xbox still isn't supporting them like they used to.

@naomha1: Balmer and Mattrick .... what a fu#$ing pair of tools. I mean, Balmer was a CEO that many corporations desired. Focused, determined, laser sighted to the goal they wanted..... but that was his downfall. So narrow focused that he could not, would not pivot even though the iceberg was right in front of him. When windows 8 beta reviews came out and their engineers, enterprise partners, journalists, everyone -started sounding alarms he went head down and just pushed it through. Just like he did with Vista earlier, hoping the other side would just work itself out.

Balmer found a kindred spirit in Don Mattrick, who seemed to believe articles from the Verge were bible verses and that a 'motion controlled all-in-one social media living room experience' was the future... oh that and the xbox one would also occasionally play games. Mattrick squandered all of the love, momentum, and good will the xbox and xbox 360 built up with the xbox one. He killed off so many studios, developers. Burnt bridges with indies and large publishers alike. I also blame him for the cancelled Scalebound and to a lesser degree Obsidians Stormlands. Because without oversight of investment, is as bad as not fulfilling investments.

I do not think FPS still dominate the market like they did 7th, 8th gen. With this RPG renascence- from CRPG like Divinity, pillars, wasteland to JPRGs like Tales, Ys, Legend of Heroes, Atelier, and a million others, WRPGs - wow, Red Dead Redemption 2, Witcher, God of War (rpg'd), Fallout, Southparks, and the love of brutal rpgs Souls/Nioh/sekiro games- I feel RPG games is now the most popular genre. Yeah a COD game sales more each year, and PUBG business model sales a ton, but they drown out their own market as there can only be one on top at a time. Meanwhile these RPGs keep coming out one after another, after another, and do very well.

And sadly Microsoft, xbox just does not represent when it comes to RPGs. They cannot depend on multi-plat rpgs alone, especially when they are timed exclusives or has less features. But Spencer seems to really be focused on games and conditioning the xbox library to be much more diverse then the FPS and bro game. I really do not think MS xbox will beat the PS5 in anyway this gen but it will at least not screw it up like it did 8th gen. This is painful groundwork, that has to be laid in order to gain ground later on. And this is great for gamers.

@Spartan_418: I really hope that it happens but in the world of corporate greed I wouldn't put it past any organisation to plan on selling a current gen version rather than giving out a patch for free to gamers who have already purchased and then trying to blame it on the pandemic.

Naughty Dog, please prove me wrong on this one.
